“I’m so scared,” I whisper.

He squeezes me tighter. “I know.”

After I pull back, James says, “What else can we do? Would a private nurse help or...”

I shake my head. “If she’s able to go home, I’ll stay with her while she’s on bedrest. I don’t think we need any professionals at this point. Thanks for the offer.”

He nods.

“There’s nothing you can do right now. Thank you for coming,” I add.

He checks his watch. “I should run but call me if anything changes.”

“I’d like to stay,” Elizabeth says.

James’ body goes stiff. “You can’t.”

Elizabeth blinks a few times. “What?”

“You cannot expose yourself to the flu while you’re nearly nine months pregnant.” He’s not budging on this, and I don’t fucking blame him.

Celeste puts her hand on Elizabeth’s arm. “I’ll stay. I promise to FaceTime you as soon as she wakes up.”

Elizabeth blinks back tears and looks around helplessly.

“It’s what Maggie would want,” I say, gently.

She nods and then gives me a hug. “Promise you’ll call us if anything changes.”

I squeeze her tighter. “I will.”

Chapter Fifty-Two

Maggie

Islowly open my eyesand look around. Where am I? I blink a few times. Something is pinching my arm. I turn my head to see a blood pressure cuff on my arm and an I.V. in my hand. I scowl and then scan the room. My eyes fall on Declan, sleeping in a chair. He looks like he hasn’t showered in a week. I try to sit up but there’s another monitor around my waist. When I move, Declan jerks awake, sitting straight up.
