I let go and fell back into the oblivion of sleep.

A rhythmic thumping. My mind searched for the word, grabbed it.

Lost it.

Found it again.

Helicopter.

I was in a helicopter.

Rock.

My gaze slid around, looking for him, and landed on an older woman with warm brown eyes.

“Rock…” I muttered. “Where’s Rock?”

“Everything’s going to be okay,” she said. “You’ve had an accident. We’re taking you to the hospital.” The woman looked over her shoulder. “Give her some more of that.”

Darkness. Again.

Willa

My eyes flew open and I was assaulted by information my brain struggled to compute.

I was lying down, being pushed down a long hall with pale green walls, fluorescent lighting passing by overhead.

There was noise — sirens and shouting and the clatter of wheels under my body.

I looked for the brown-eyed woman and found a brown-eyed man wearing blue scrubs instead, saying something to someone on the other side of the gurney.

“Rock,” I said, then gasped as pain jabbed through my right leg. “I was with someone. I need to know if he’s okay.”

The brown-eyed man looked down at me. “Willa? Do you know where you are?”

How did they know my name?

“My friend…”

“We’ll get information on your friend,” the brown-eyed man said. “I’m Doctor Patel. You’re at the hospital. You’ve had an accident, but we’re going to take good care of you.”

The gurney turned left and clattered down another hallway.

Doctor Patel looked over his shoulder. “What’s the status on those beds in Trauma?”

“Making room,” someone said behind him. “Two more incoming.”

“Wait with the patient,” Doctor Patel said.

The gurney stopped moving and another face appeared above me, this time a woman with copper hair and a pretty smile. She reminded me of Claire and I felt hot tears leak down my temples.

Doctor Patel looked down at me. “I’m going to leave you with Nurse Reynolds here. She’ll take good care of you.”

Nurse Reynolds smiled down at me. “Right here if you need anything.”

“My friend…”
