Her head snaps up, and her eyes widen with surprise.
“See to it that I don’t arrive in this office before you tomorrow, or you’ll find yourself looking for another job.”
A smile as bright as the sun crosses her face, making her honey-brown eyes lighten like flames in a fireplace. The radiance of the smile is like a sucker punch. Shouldn’t I fire her for my peace of mind and the sake of this contract? If she smiles at me like that every day, how can I focus on anything other than her striking face?
“Thank you very much. I assure you that I’ll give my all to the job and not fail you. I was nervous earlier. You can’t imagine my joy when I was hired for this position. It meant I’d have to move to New York, far away from home again, but I didn’t mind because….” She pauses and chews on her bottom lip, drawing my observation to its lush fullness.
My brows arc when she stands there, clutching her purse as if it’s her most prized possession. I remind myself again that she’s perfect for the job. Otherwise, I don’t think I can handle such idle chatter.
“I’m sorry for carrying on like that. I get so excited sometimes that—it won’t happen again.”
“It better not.” My eyes trail her high-neck light blue chiffon blouse down to her dark brown pencil skirt, which matches the color of her eyes. Even though the clothes portray her lovely figure, it’s apparent that they have seen better days.
“Let’s add clothing allowance to that advance,” I say before I can hold back my words. For her not to have the wrong impression that she’ll be dressing for my pleasure, I quickly add, “We’ll have many meetings to attend, and I want the members of my team to look professional.”
A deep flush creeps up her face, and the narcissistic part of me enjoys the sight before I castigate myself. I’m usually not this way but desiring my employee has me acting out of character.
“Susan will take you to your office and show you around.” I press a button on the intercom to summon my P.A. Susan promptly arrives and leads her out of the office.
As I watch the gentle sway of Hailey’s hips heading toward the sturdy mahogany door, blood rushes to my loins, and my dick rises to life.
Down, big boy.
I try to recall how long it has been since I had sex. I’ve been so caught up with winning the contract that my sex life has suffered. But I most certainly won’t revive it with my gorgeous new employee. Too much is at stake. It isn’t only the harassment suit that she might file against me or that she might talk to Hunter. There’s my twelve-year-old daughter to consider. While I don’t care about what her mother thinks, Amber means the world to me. Having my daughter learn that I am having an affair with a much younger employee wouldn’t bode well for our fragile relationship.
Although it will be insanely hard, I’ll maintain professional conduct with Hailey. Even if it kills me.
CHAPTER3
HAILEY
After Mr. Payne’s subtle but humiliating quip about my clothes yesterday, I decide to splurge on a few new pieces. Although, I don’t see anything wrong with what I have on... I’m shocked when I receive a sizable clothing allowance before work ends. It’s enough to send half of it to my sister.
After getting home, I knock on my neighbor’s door and ask where I can get some fancy clothes that won’t break the bank. Kendra is more than happy to assist me, and she takes me to RealReal. When I return to my apartment, I try on the new pieces and choose what I’ll wear to the office the next day.
After dinner, I call Melissa.
“How was your first day?” she asks after telling me about her new life at Yale.
“Okay, I suppose.”
“Just okay? What happened, Hailey?”
I laugh softly as I turn on my bed. “What makes you think anything happened?”
“Your dismissive voice, and I know you. You would have said more than ‘okay, I guess.’ Out with it.”
“All right! My boss isn’t what I expected.”
“How so? Is he demanding? Does he look like Shrek?”
Laughter bubbles from my throat. “On the contrary. He’s gorgeous.” My mouth runs dry as I remember meeting him. “You should see him. Banging body, sexy as hell, green eyes that can make you lose your voice when he looks at you.”
“Wow! He sounds like he made a great impression.”
I blush and shrug. “I wasn’t expecting a drop-dead gorgeous boss, but I’ll manage. I’m there to do a job, and that’s it.”
“A job on him, you mean.” Melissa teases.
