“Don’t tell me you’re feeling sentimental, brother. You were never a collector of rare things before.” Lucifer steps away from me, and while they discuss, my eyes clash with Daemon’s. I’ve never seen him this angry before. It’s electric, hovering over him like a dark storm cloud. It’s the pressing heat before the whip of lightning across the sky.
Dmitriy looks bored as he slides across the seat to the poor, sobbing human. I look away when he brushes her hair from her shoulder in a gentle caress. He likes to hurt pretty things, but first, he likes to be the hero.
“So, if I let you have the angel, you’ll stand down completely? Forgive me, brother, if it sounds too easy.”
That’sbecause it is.
My attention gets drawn back to the two men circling each other like vultures. At first glance, Lucifer looks calm and composed, but I don’t miss the tic in his cheek. He doesn’t trust his brother.
“Come on,” chuckles Amenadiel, his hands clasped behind his back. “Are you not bored with this feud between us? How many years have we been at each other’s throats?”
“Too long.”
“Don’t you think it’s time we bury the hatchet?”
They walk away to converse over by the fire. I try to listen in, but they’re too far away. My poor heart beats in a staccato rhythm, and my breaths are shallow. While I’m fully aware Daemon kidnapped me, it hasn’t truly dawned on me that I’m a prisoner until now. They’re discussing my future like I’m nothing more than a piece of furniture or one of the dead girls in the room. I’m struck with a sudden pang of homesickness that coils itself around my heart. Tears sting my eyes, but I don’t let them see. Instead, I hide away behind a curtain of blonde hair and proceed to pick at my cuticles until they bleed.
Soft fingers slide beneath my chin and tilt it up. “Are you okay, Angel?”
Am I okay? I don’t think I’ll ever be okay again. My head shakes and the tears spill over, trailing a hot path down my cheeks. Daemon swipes them off with his thumb before dipping it into my mouth. His touch is gentle in a way I didn’t know him capable.
“This is cute,” Dmitriy drawls across the table. The girl is dead. He shoves her off and slowly rises to his feet while wiping off a trail of blood from his chin with the back of his hand. “You better enjoy each other now while you can.”
Snarling deep in his throat like an animal, Daemon bares his teeth. “Stay the fuck away from her, or I’ll peel your fucking skin off your body!”
“Now, we both know you won’t do that.” Dmitriy chuckles, continuing his slow approach. “I’m untouchable, cousin. Your girl hereis not.”
Ice runs through my veins at the dark look in his eyes when he releases a deep, taunting chuckle.
“I’ve got to say, she has the tightest pussy I’ve ever fucked.”
All hell breaks loose. Daemon flies at him with his wings on full display as a terrifying snarl rips from his lips. They crash into the table and fall to the floor. It all happens so fast. With my hands pressed to my mouth, I watch Lucifer calmly walk over and haul Daemon off Dmitriy like he weighs nothing.
“Enough!” His voice is sharp, cutting through the ensuing silence like a whip. The glare he gives his son could kill a man on the spot, but Daemon is unfazed, breathing harder than a provoked bull.
“You’re not this fucking naive!” Daemon growls, low and threatening. “You know exactly why they want her.”
Lucifer stays calm, giving nothing away, and his dark eyes remain cold and detached. “Calm yourself down, son.”
Rising to his feet and smirking at me, Dmitriy walks past, whispering, “I’ll see you at school, Angel.”
ChapterTwenty-Five
AURELIA
The night air is cool, and the chill in the breeze turned my nipples into hard pebbles the second we stepped outside. It’s a short walk back to the house, and while Daemon could fly us, he chose not to. I get the sense that he needs the icy breeze to clear his head before he explodes with anger.
His father and uncle continued talking business like I wasn’t sitting right there. I don’t know what this means for me or what has been decided, but I would rather try my luck out in the woods than move in with Dmitriy and his uncle.
“I told you not to speak!”
I hug my arms around myself, rubbing my bare skin. “I had no choice.”
“The fuck you did. You could have kept your lips shut!”
My breaths are visible in the air as I whirl on him. “Fuck you, Daemon! You didn’t say shit back there. Someone had to talk. But, you… You were too busy touching that human girl and drinking her blood.”
With his hands in his pockets, he throws his head back and laughs bitterly. “Is that what bothers you about everything that happened tonight? Not that my father and uncle discussed you as part of a sale?”
