Page 202 of Broken Lines

The postage of the postcard in my hand that he unquestionably wrote is fromsevenyears ago.

I stare wide-eyed at the card in my hands.

Ally, I made it. Thanks for everything.

Holy shit.

“Mel!”

I jolt when I hear Alice’s voice from the living room.

“Need a hand?”

“Nope!” I almost trip over myself in shoving the postcard back into the cabinet and closing the door.

“I got it!”

The kettle is just beginning to whistle when I turn it off, and then spot the jar of tea bags right there next to the stove. I pour a few mugs, stick them on a tray, and quickly rush back into the living room.

“Sorry, here we go.”

Alice grins as I pass her a mug, doing my best not to stare, or just blurt it out and ask her what thehellI just saw back in the kitchen.

But I don’t do that. Because even if I just met her, I know she’s a good person. And whatever the mystery involving Will that I just accidentally looked at is, I’m sure it’s been hidden for a reason.

A reason that can wait for another day.

So instead, I settle into Jackson’s lap as the afternoon slides into night. And my tears from earlier turn to laughter and smiles as I drown myself in pictures, stories, and the music of the father I never knew. And as I sit there wrapped in Jackson’s arms with a smile on my face as Eleanor starts to play old Velvet Guillotine songs, all I feel is lucky.

And loved.

And at peace.

I turn to him, and he grins as he cups my face, leans in, and kisses me softly.

My missing chord.

My killer line.

But most of all, the man I love.

All of my books can be read individually as standalone. You can find complete book lists and suggested reading orders on my website.
