“It might be fun.” Angelina tapped my hand. “Just fun. Nothing major.”
I sipped my drink. Wasn’t sure I’d ever domajoragain. I’d been in love with Damon, still was, if I was being totally honest with myself. But at least I’d experienced it. That was more than I’d ever expected less than a year ago, considering I was a shut-in.
Damon and I couldn’t be together right now. But maybe someday.
“How is he?” I asked.
“Grumpy. Doing his training,” Sarah said. “Working on getting a dog for him.”
“Like a service dog?” I sat up. “Wow. That’s pretty cool.”
“He gets around well, but with a dog, might help even more.”
Tears burned my eyes. “Cool.” I so wanted to be a part of that.
“Did I mention grumpy?”
Chapter Fifty-Three
Damon
“Howcanyoustandthis crying?” I asked Drey as I rocked a tiny baby in my arms.
“You get used to it,” he said. “Suck it up.”
I huffed and settled back in the rocking chair. “You suckered me into this.”
“Hey, you had an appointment, I had this scheduled, so you’re helping. Quit whining.”
I danced my fingers over the tiny baby’s bare head, then traced his cheeks to his mouth. It was wide open, and the scream he was letting off would probably wake the dead.
Jeez this kid was small. “I can’t believe you’ve done this baby rocking for so many years. I didn’t realize how long you’d been doing it.”
“Yeah, well, I like to think someone did it for me when I was coming off the drugs.”
“And me.”
“Exactly.” Drey’s voice sounded higher.
“But you don’t sit down while you rock?”
“Vertical rocking works better. But they get a little squirmy sometimes,” Drey said. “You’re better off in the chair for now.”
“So, this is what we were like after we were born?”
“Yep. These kids get a rough start.”
“Some don’t escape it.” I grimaced.
“We did,” Drey said.
“For the most part.” I pressed my cheek against the baby’s head. So smooth, which was a total contrast to the harsh, wicked screech coming from him. “What’s Bill think about us going to see Walker?”
“Might be a good idea. Anyone snooping around you?” Drey asked. “It’s been a few months since the party beating.”
Party beating. I still woke up in the middle of the night hearing Lizzie’s screams.
“Damon?”
