“Yikes. Got to hand it to that kid. He’s kicking ass.”
“Do you know much about what he was like pre-blindness?”
“Just what Drey’s told me. And it’s not pretty. Damn gangs. You know that one of Damon’s tasks was to rob Drey’s store, and the punk Damon was with stabbed Drey?
I swallowed hard. “I did. Angelina told me. You don’t trust him, do you?”
“Takes me a while to trust, girl. I’m getting there with him. I know he’s got it in him.”
“Surprise!” Doug spun around the corner holding a cup of coffee from the campus coffee shop.
I’d seen it on the map but hadn’t found it yet. “Doug!”
“I almost drop-kicked you, man.” Sarah shook out her hands. “Shit!”
Yeah, she was still pretty jumpy after what went down with her old pimp coming after and kidnapping her. I couldn’t blame her at all.
Doug quirked an eyebrow at Sarah as if her head had spun around. He didn’t know about her past, how could he? But I almost wanted to deck him, too, because he’d scared the shit out of me as well.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
He handed me the cup. “Iced chai latte. Your favorite, right?”
I took the drink. “Thanks.”
“You told me, remember? That today you were heading out to get your books for classes. I’ve got one last class, and I decided to finish it up over the summer. I figured I could show you around.”
Sarah stood there, a smirk on her face. “Well, aren’t you just the sweet little front desk guy.”
“Um, what?” Doug asked.
“Nothing,” I said and held up my cup. “Thanks. We were gonna stop at the coffee shop after books.”
“Well, since he neglected to get me a drink, we still have to stop or I might rip someone’s head off if I don’t get caffeine.”
“I can walk Lizzie to the bookstore if you want to go get your coffee.”
“Deal.” She whipped around and nearly plowed over a student holding a map like I was.
“Sarah!”Little stinker.
“Not really sure she needs any more caffeine. She seems jumpy enough. Lead the way. I’m assuming you want to find it on your own?”
“How’d you guess?” I sipped my tea.
“Figured you would.”
I stepped over the line in the flooring and started on my way. Doug glanced behind him, then at me. Yeah, he didn’t know me so well, did he?
“What classes do you have?” he asked.
“Just the literature general requirement. Reading list looks pretty good. Already read a couple. Last year.”
“Nice. That always helps.”
“So does having movies of them.”
Doug laughed. “Let me guess. You have Professor Jandson?”
