Tidy.

Controlled.

I stepped to my bag, my heart hammering. My purse. I had a Blow Pop in my purse, didn’t I? My fingers met the smooth plastic wrap around the candy. Should be cherry. I’d had only two of the three Angelina brought for me.

Pulling it out, I set the bag on the floor next to the bed.

“Is that part of your routine?” Damon asked.

I whirled around as I brought the sucker to my mouth.

“Touching things, moving things around…” He took in a deep breath. “And suckers?”

“We can’t go,” I said around my sucker. “You have to stay here and get better. The headaches. The blind—”

“First, I’m not gonna be blind forever. Yeah, the headaches thing sucks ass, too, but I can get outpatient treatment for that. LizBelle. You have to help me.”

I hated hearing him say he’d get his sight back. It wasn’t fair they were holding that information from him, but I couldn’t tell him. Drey would freak. But I couldn’t let Damon go. Help him escape. I reached for my bag. “I’m calling Drey.”

“No!” A hard body landed against mine.

“Damon!” I reached for him, but we both went down.

He started laughing. His whole body shook beneath mine. “Damn my aim sucks ass.”

The door behind us opened, and Nurse Ray flew through. “What happened?”

Despite Damon not being able to see me, his eyes begged me to help him. Pleaded. He hated it here, like I hated it in my apartment back in New York, but I couldn’t leave. I didn’t have the ability to. But now I did. Sure, I couldn’t walk on a crack in the sidewalk or even think of touching a cab door, but I could help him.

“We’re fine. He tripped getting ready for his first outing.”

“Doc just signed off on that,” he said, then asked, “Any blood?”

“I’m okay.” Damon’s face was bright red, but his smile confirmed he was fine.

“We’re good. I’m going to take him down for a walk, then. Okay?”

“Sure. Outdoor walking area in the courtyard within the hospital.” He walked to the door. “I’ll get you a mobile call button and his walking stick.”

Damon groaned.

“We’ll take it.” I patted his chest. “Thanks.”

“Be back in five.”

The door shut behind the nurse, and I faced Damon. “Are you really okay?”

“Hurry, we have only two minutes before he comes back.” His hands came to my head, one touching my left ear and the other my neck. They moved together until he cupped my cheeks.

“Two minutes?”

“Because I plan on kissing you for three of the five before he comes back.” His mouth covered mine with a surprising accuracy.

Nimble fingers threaded through my hair, pulling me closer. I almost pushed off him, because, hello, we were on the floor.

A hospital floor.

But my body had other plans. It immediately softened to his, molding to his hard lines. A tickle deep in my belly triggered a wave of heat storming through my chest to my neck. Teeth scored my bottom lip, drawing it in, and I opened.
