“I can’t.” Kayla laid out the green and yellow dress before unzipping the skirt. “I told you, I haven’t worn this for Tove yet. She’s probably expecting it tonight, and it would be a nice surprise. She went nuts when I wore the nightgown she got me. Practically ruined it that first night…”

“Uh-huh. So wear it tomorrow.”

“You’re not listening.” Kayla stepped out of her skirt. “I’ve got a good thing going with Tove. I can’t fuck this up. It’s been a month and she hasn’t dumped me yet. If anything, she’s getting more brazen.” There was no need to elaborate. While Kayla didn’t share the intimate details of the sex she had with Tove, she had implied enough that her friend got the gist.Tove likes to be on top. She likes to get a little rough. She’s never satisfied with one position or only one of us getting off. Those were three things Kayla liked in a lover, but this was still her first time experiencing them with a woman. While she had gotten used to the differences between a strap-on and “the real thing,” it didn’t stop her from being surprised every time Tove got in there and made Kayla come faster than anyone else ever had.I didn’t even know I could come in thirty seconds. All right, that had only happened once, but Kayla could still count the number of times she had sex with Tove on two hands.

“Not everything is going to be perfect,” Chrissy pointed out. “You think I showed off every gift Huey got me when we were dating? No way. His tastes for me are terrible. The man sent me the worst fabrics known. The kind of stuff that still makes me itch to think about.”

“I’d like to wear this bra. So, the dress it is.” Thankfully, when Kayla got into it, the opaque fabric perfectly covered the entirety of the red push-up bra that was one cup too small. On the other hand…The heart-shaped necklinereallymade her cleavage pop. Kayla could either bring more attention to it or find some way to cover it up. The woman who had planned on wearing a heavy sweater to offset the cold now reached for a white half-sweater she buttoned at the top but not the bottom. Only a peek of cleavage. Enough to tantalize Tove without Kayla completely embarrassing herself at a family-owned country club.

Chrissy flopped onto her side, the guest bed shaking. Already Kayla knew she could never bring Tove back here on a date, but that sealed it.Everyone would hear everything.Chrissy and Huey had a great bed that barely moved when Kayla tried it out. No, the cheap mattress and cheaper bed frame were here in the guest room, and Kayla wouldnotcomplain. It was free, after all. Since she started her job at the Brickhouse Brewery, she had paid for more of the groceries and offered to help with some of the utilities, but that bed was her problem.

Like… perhaps… if Tove asked her to move in…

“Things really are going good with a woman, huh?” Chrissy asked through a yawn.

“Aren’t you happy for me?”

“Of course I am. Your whole reason for moving here was to snag you a helluva match. Just… you know. She’s a woman. You’re lying to her about being gay. That can’t last long.”

Kayla pulled the dress into place and prepared to remove her beauty mask. “She thinks I’m bi. Which… whatever. Maybe I am. I haven’t hated the sex at all.”

“When she’s doing you, sure. How are you handling the reciprocation, though?”

“Like it’s rocket science?” Kayla walked across the hallway and stood before the guest bathroom mirror. Bit by bit, the mask came off her face. “I’ve used my hands and mouth for weirder things.”

Chrissy’s voice projected from one room to the other. “All I’m saying is that I don’t think I could do it. Maybe for one night or two, but nothing about other women appeals to me. Maybe you are kinda queer, Kay. It’s a heckuva way to find out though!”

Kayla wiped off her face and returned to her bedroom. “I said that it wasn’t bothering me. That’s all I care about. This whole time, I’ve known that I wasn’t going to be super attracted to whoever wanted to go out with me if I only cared about security. Even Thomas Fredriksson isn’t my super type.”

“He’s a guy, though.”

“One who is back with his wife, so he’s not even in contention. Besides, unless I had genuine feelings for him, it would besucha bad idea to turn on Tove. I think it would kill her.” Kayla sat next to her friend on the bed. “I’m the first person she’s dated in years.”

“Really? Guess this probably isn’t a happening town for lesbian dating.”

What if I told you it’s been twenty years?Tove was candid that her last relationship blowing up was why she moved back to Bend and assimilated herself into the family, with the understanding she wouldn’t pretend to be straight. Yet between the bucolic atmosphere and her being a homebody at heart, Tove never made finding a girlfriend a priority. Kayla was a “happy happenstance.” That was it.

If only some of my gay friends back in Portland knew that women like her are lurking a few hours away…

“It’s why I’ve gotta give it a shot,” Kayla said. “No red flags so far. She likes spoiling me. I’m meeting some of her family today, or at least we’re going public at the country club…” Kayla pulled her legs up and wrapped her arms around her knees. “Maybe if her family likes me enough, we can accelerate things by the end of the year.”

“Accelerate? You’re going straight to engagement, huh?”

“It’s 2023 and I can marry a woman if I want.”

“Damn, Kay. Merciless.”

Something about Chrissy’s half-whispered tone caught Kayla off guard. “Is it merciless? That’s not how I think of it. I simply know a good catch when I see one, and this one fell into my lap. Or I should say I fell into the street before her…”

“I know that it’s a tough market out there and you’re not getting any younger, but do be careful, Kay. I lucked out with Huey being a great guy. Not everyone gets such a good ending, though. How many sugar babies do we know who went on to marry their daddies and were out the door within four years?”

“What matters is if they were set for life after the divorce.”

Chrissy shook her head. “The money’s not what it used to be. Gotta find someone you actually want to stay married to.”

“What do you want from me? I’ve got to figure something out. Shit’s getting more expensive, and I’ve got bills to pay. You and my brother can’t keep helping me. I can’t get a decent job to save my life to keep up with inflation and… you know. I might get sick sometime in the next twenty years. I don’t have a family that can help me. I know how to look nice and seduce people. Enough, anyway. And this nice, attractive, richwoman wants to date me. Why would I let that slip through my fingers? Because I never saw myself marrying a woman?”

Chrissy got up. “I’m more worried about you dropping the M word already. A woman who has made it to fifty and hasn’t dated in ‘years’ is probably not in a hurry to go down the aisle with anyone, including someone she loves.”
