She reached over to caress my cheek. Her hand was deliciously warm against my cold skin. “Are you okay? How did she make you shift without the moon?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. They shot me with a tranquilizer dart, and the pain of the shift woke me up. If she cast a spell or used a charm or something, I don’t know. I tried to shift back, but I was trapped, like there was a wall between me and my wolf.”

A crease formed between her brows. “Maybe she has a spell to control the animal and draw it forward so the man can’t come back?”

The sound of that chilled me. “Is that kind of magic possible? Fuck.” I shook my head. “So she could keep us…as wolves?”

“Maybe?” Ruby sighed. “Her magic is powerful. She did things tonight that I didn’t realize were even possible.”

“But at what price? She’s trying to conjure immortality, and it apparently takes the blood of an Alpha and an Elemental.” I blew out a pent-up breath.

Ruby got quiet, staring out the passenger window. Finally she looked over at me. “I’m not looking forward to talking to Lillian and Mathias about us tomorrow.”

I rested my hand on her thigh. “You’re my mate. Fate partnered us for a reason. We’re nothing like Sienna and Victor.”

She nodded. “We’re not thirsty for power. We just want to live our lives and…raise a family?”

I arched a brow. “Did you want kids?”

“You said until you had an heir tonight so…”

I chuckled. “That doesn’t answer my question.”

She rolled her eyes and shrugged. “I think I always expected I’d be a mom someday. Never imagined it’d be to werewolves, but…”

I leaned over and kissed her long and slow. “We’ve got time. No pressure, okay?”

She drew back. “You’re not worried about us having kids together? You saw Shawn and Samuel tonight. They have the strength of a werewolves and the magic of witches. They’re dangerous.”

I squeezed her thigh. “They also have a mom who is nothing like you.”

“Maybe she wasn’t always like that.” Ruby stared out the windshield into the darkness again. “She lost everything and had to build her own coven.”

“Maybe so, but that doesn’t justify hiring people to kill werewolves and using their blood and body parts to make yourself stronger.” I shook my head. “And where was Victor? Maybe he’s dead.”

She shrugged and looked my way. “You don’t think werewolves with witch blood are too powerful?”

“I don’t have all the answers, but I don’t think Fate would’ve marked you as my one true mate if our kids were going to be some kind of supernatural abomination.”

She seemed to ponder that for a minute before she met my eyes. “Good… Because my period is late.”

My heart stuttered. We’d been careful, using condoms ever since the one night a little over a week ago when passion got the best of us. “Are you?”

“I don’t know.” She shook her head. “Probably not. I haven’t taken a test or anything. I feel fine. I was really stressed about the ceremony. That’s more than likely all it is.”

But she was unsure enough to mention it to me. I took her hand and kissed it. “Whatever happens, I’ll be right beside you until my last breath. We’re a team. We’ll face it together.”

Her eyes shone in the dim light. “The wolf and the witch?”

I nodded and bent to kiss her lips. “Mywitch.”

The drive back to her place seemed to take forever. I hit every damned light. NowIwas the one wishing I knew the teleportation spell. When I turned onto her street, I found a parking space on the corner and turned off the engine as I leaned over and claimed her lips again.

She moaned into the kiss, her fingers sliding through my hair. Our tongues wrestled hungrily, desperate to get even closer.

Her teeth scraped my bottom lip, drawing a growl from my throat. “We should get inside and warm up.”

“I’m a fan of that plan.”
