“Come to me,” I whimpered, reaching for his pants. “Come for me.”
My trembling fingers floundered for the button on his trousers, but before I could wipe the sweat from my eyes, he leapt up, staring at me as if I were a stranger.
Dumbfounded, I sat on my knees, tongue lolling out as I begged him silently with my eyes, hands extended toward him.
“Come to me,” I whispered, but my words only repelled him back further.
Confused, I blinked, falling back on my haunches as a haunted, horrified expression crossed over Atlas’ face.
“W-what happened?” I sputtered, not comprehending his look. “Come here. Let me return the favor.”
He shook his head with so much vehemence, sweat splattered onto the desk around me.
“No,” he mumbled, turning away, shame coloring his expression. “No, I can’t.”
A laugh escaped my lips, and for a fleeting, stupid second, I thought he was joking.
“I’ll just come to you then,” I purred, lurching forward.
My actions took him by surprise, and he fell into the wall as I crashed into him, my lips finding the small of his throat, licking out to taste his Adam’s apple.
“STOP!”
The thunder in his single word froze me on the spot, and my arms fell to my side.
He was serious.
“We can’t do this,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair before he again avoided my confused stare. “It was a mistake.”
And just like that, my security crumbled again, the world falling down around me. I wrapped my arms protectively around my naked body. When was I ever going to learn?
Chapter15
Atlas
Bianca’s pain might as well have been mine. Her perplexity was obvious, naked, and shattering. Those big, damn eyes locked on me, demanding an explanation I still couldn’t give her.
Even though I’d fucked it all up already. I’d gone too far, hadn’t I? It was already too late.
“What are you talking about?” she demanded, the uncertainty on her face breaking my heart.
She was waiting for me to crack a smile, to show that I was joking, that we were playing a game that would result in us both naked on the floor again. But I couldn’t. I shouldn’t have gone this far already.
“Stop,” I repeated, pushing her back.
The taste of her sweet saltiness on my lips was too much for me to take. If she continued to look at me like that, demanding answers I couldn’t give her without sounding like a complete asshole, I needed to get out of there. Now.
She shook her head.
“No.” Her voice was flat and determined. “No, I’m not stopping. You started it!”
“You’re right,” I agreed. “And now I’m ending it.”
I pushed past her to turn the phones back on, straightening my clothing as I did. I felt her eyes boring into me as I moved, the look of disbelief on her face scarring me for life. It wasn’t fair what I’d done. I shouldn’t have come. Sage had tried to warn me, and I hadn’t listened. The fae had foreseen this better than me.
I had behaved stupidly.
Instantly, the office filled with ringing, but Bianca made no move to answer the calls.
