“He’s gone,” came a muffled voice over the comms.
“Who?” I questioned, the blood pumping inside me to a heady beat as I clocked one of the Owls kicking out the legs of the piece of trash soldier before me. He fell to the floor and pummelled his fists onto each part of his body before stepping back and lodging a bullet through his temple.Good riddance.
“Adam.”Shit. We need to get him.
My hands tightened around Milla’s body as I carried her out, garnering some grimaces from the Owls at her being unconscious.Yeah, it wasn't exactly an easy choice.Ronnie and Miles followed me, watching my six just in case, even though it seemed we’d cleared most of the warehouse. I diverted to one of our vehicles, laying her down gently as Miles got in with her, giving me a look.
“I’ll go with her and call the doctor in, making sure she’s safe,” he promised. “I’m going to Chris and Val’s, yeah?”
A firm nod. “Yeah. Thanks.”
“No thanks necessary,” he replied, turning on the engine and getting the hell out of here.
Now, I could focus my attention again. Ronnie and I weaved back down into the warehouse, finding dead bodies shuffled to the side. Some of the Owls coaxed victims out and brought them up to surface level where we’d called in extra support for them to get taken in straight away. They deserved to rebuild a life of happiness and security away from the viciousness they’d suffered.
Dorian grabbed my attention, his hand halting my movements as I passed. “Go. We’ve got this covered, take some of your team and find him.”
I jerked my head in thanks, speaking in the comms. “Thomas, I need you with me outside, matter of priority. Any other Beta team available, come too. We need to find that asshole before he disappears off the face of the earth.” The last words turned into a snarl as my emotions wavered close to the edge.
Minutes later, Thomas cracked his knuckles and got to work, his fingers working fast as we waited. I watched him as he sat with the laptop on his lap in the passenger seat. The others waited outside the opened door for instructions.
I removed the comms piece from my body, storing it safely in the car’s glove box. Internally I willed Thomas to hurry the hell up, but badgering him about it would not help the situation, frustratingly.
“Got it,” he announced minutes later. “He’s heading north, past the city district towards the suburbs.”
I glared at the men outside the door. “Thomas will ping you the location to follow. Texas and Preston grab one of the vehicles, Drew and Ronnie get the van. We don’t know what we’re walking into and we’ll need to secure him inside.”
With that I buckled up, jamming the car into drive and took off in the GPS direction, which was moving farther away. My hands clenched around the steering wheel. We’d get him, no doubt about it. Wouldn’t let that slippery cunt out of sight.
“Okay, he’s got about ten minutes on us,” Thomas commented. “Veering off track down a dead end private pathway.” I flitted my gaze towards him before setting my eyes back on the road, winding in and out of busy daytime traffic not caring about my speed.
The police had been notified and would let us bypass with ease if any cameras picked us up, or reports were phoned in.
“He’s stopped.”Finally.
Miles later and around half an hour from where and when we’d set off, I veered down a private lane. Dust kicked up around the car as the boys behind me followed in their vehicles. Thomas packed his laptop away, double checking the signal hadn’t moved and prepared his weapons. None of us knew what we’d be walking into, we could have easily just driven into a set up.
I threw the car into park as the other vehicles behind me did the same, fanning around to block the only exit that Thomas knew from quick satellite images. I withdrew the switchblade from my pocket, flicking it out in preparation as my team followed my lead.
Stepping around the side of the two-storey moderate sized house, I came face-to-face with Adam, and two others scrambling back and forth between the property with bags. Evidently, trying to run for their lives, literally.
“Oh, Adam…” Preston taunted, with an excited grin plastered on his face.
The man in question froze, with his back turned away from us blocking the car door. He muttered something quietly and turned round in place, his jaw working side to side looking flustered. Huh, that’s what you got from running from your fate.
We fanned out. Thomas and Drew grabbed the two others. They protested while being cuffed to the spindled decking, but we needed them unable to escape, especially with all of us before them.Run, it would make the chase fun.I dared them in my head, knowing they wouldn’t.
Preston, Texas and I pushed forward nearly in his space but he stepped to the side, letting us see what he stood in front of. Or rather, who. A child? What the fuck?
I came to a standstill, as did my brothers. I peered between Adam and this kid, looking for some explanation. Kids were off limits, they were innocent. The Owls protected kids something fierce.
Adam grinned smugly. “I’d like to introduce you to my son,” he told us casually, as if he didn’t drop a bombshell.A son? Since when?
“Brothers,” he continued with an air of triumph, desecrating the wordbrothers. He never was one. “Meet my son, Kai Dean West.” He chuckled. “Mine and Milla’s son I should say.”
A chill wracked down my bones. He couldn’t be serious, could he? I laughed, but there was no humour in it. “Good one. Nearly had me believing your bulls—” I cut myself off, knowing there was small ears nearby.
“Kai,” Adam voiced. “Tell these men who your mom is.” His self-satisfied smirk was still in place. I wanted to eliminate it.
