“Whose blood is that?” I didn’t have to ask because instinct had already answered the question.

Gio came to stand with me as Joey and Salvi held Romero up and guided him into the room.

“Oh, no!” I screamed. “No!”

Chapter 8

Romero

I met Gio at the club to handle a few things. I didn’t like running our illegitimate business from Cantinos, but because the house was still a crime scene, and I didn’t want to conduct these particular dealings with Lu at the penthouse, this location was our only choice.

“Thanks again for letting us stay at the penthouse.” I sat behind the desk in the back office. “As soon as the cops are done with their useless investigation we should be out of your way.”

“Stay as long as you need to.”

“I’m sure we’re interfering in your sex life.” I smirked. “After a few more nights you’ll be throwing us out of there.”

“My sex life wasn’t that great before you came to stay with me.” He frowned. “You keep me so busy, I don’t have time for it.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“I sat with Lu last night.”

“How did she seem?”

“She’s really sad.” He leaned against the desk. “It’s not fair for one woman to know so much pain.”

“Hooking up with me didn’t help matters.”

“She would be the first one to tell you, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to her.”

“It’s the other way around. Besides, she might not feel like that anymore.” I was the one who brought Stella into our home to help with Lu’s isolation. “An innocent woman is dead because of me. One who she cared for very much.”

“You can keep saying that, but it’s not your fault. We have to find the fuckers who did this and show them our style of retaliation.”

“I will kill the person responsible for this.”

Salvi knocked on the door before opening it.

“Antonio Torrio is here to see you,” he said. “He says you’re expecting him.”

“Maybe we’ll get some answers.” I stood from the desk and buttoned my suit jacket. “Send him in.”

Antonio told his guard to wait by the door before entering the office and closing the door. He nodded at Gio before acknowledging me. I thought it was odd he was alone.

“Where is Vincent?” I didn’t expect Rocco to take this meeting with him, but I wouldn’t have thought he would come without one of his other sons.

“He’s busy,” he said. “Do I need him here?”

“No.”

“I don’t appreciate being summoned,” he said. “But because you are my niece’s husband, I’ll make an exception.”

“I don’t appreciate having my house ambushed and having an innocent friend murdered in said house.” I gripped the edge of my desk. “And don’t use my wife as an excuse for anything.”

“I only meant that I’m here because I know Luciana was close to Stella.” He shook his head. “How is my niece?”

“How do you think she is?” I snapped. “She’s devastated, but it isn’t like you care.”
