Logan
Iborrowed one of the cars from the precinct that are allotted for detectives to use. I didn’t have the patience to take public transportation. Lake is home. Our apartment building has its own parking garage, and each apartment is allotted one spot. Only Lake has a car, but he said he planned on keeping it in New Jersey until his lease is up on the townhouse. None of us ever drive in the city. Still, I’m glad when I pull in and the spot is empty. I forgot to ask and was afraid Lake chose to drive here after all.
I’m so anxious to see my men that I pawned off most of my paperwork on my partner. I’m usually not an asshole like that, but I need to see them. Especially after Ev mentioned that Lake seems to be struggling. There’s no way I could concentrate on my reports after hearing that.
I don’t bother with the slow ass elevator and take the stairs two at a time as I climb my way up. My nerves are on fire and that itch I’ve been feeling since Lake left is only getting stronger. It’s like my body knows that my men need me and is giving me physical discomfort until I remedy the situation.
The apartment is dark when I get inside, but I know, without truly knowing how, that both Lake and Ev are in the bedroom. Every instinct I have is telling me to go there, and now. I lock up and quickly scan the main space, but everything seems to be shut off and locked up for the night. After toeing off my boots and hanging up my coat, I notice the luggage and winter gear haphazardly tossed to the side and abandoned. Fuck, Lake must’ve been worse off than Ev hinted at. No way would he have let that go otherwise.
I want to get to my men now, but I still take the time to unload and lock up my weapon before finally getting to the bedroom. My heart clenches as soon as I see them. Lake and Ev are so tightly wrapped around each other, I can’t tell where one of them ends and the other begins. If it wasn’t for the shock of auburn hair peeking out from under the covers, I wouldn’t be able to tell who is who.
I’m not sure how long I stand there watching them, but the itch in my skin begins to ease, and I find a sense of peace I haven’t had since Lake left. I’m still dying to touch them though, so I strip down to my underwear and slide under the covers, not bothering with anything else. Lake only stirs a fraction as my bare skin touches his back. He’s wearing a shirt, but it’s ridden up, and I relish the feel of his bare skin against mine. I hear a soft sound and look over Lake to see Ev watching me.
“He’s really here,” I whisper.
“Yes, he’s really here.” Ev turns his hand on the arm that’s draped across Lake so that his palm is facing up. I take the hint and grab his hand, squeezing it. And just like that, everything clicks into place. All the unease, the panic, just evaporates once I have my hands on them both. I settle down as a sudden wave of exhaustion overtakes me. Obviously, there’s a lot we still need to work on, but for tonight, all my worries can wait.
* * *
I’m not sure how long I’ve been asleep when I wake with a start and my first real boner in I don’t know how long. It doesn’t take me long to realize why, as Lake’s ass grinds right over my crotch. Holy fuck.
“What a welcome home, Little Bird,” I groan, leaning into his touch.
“I think he’s still asleep.”
I prop myself up on my elbow to see Ev sitting cross-legged on the bed, watching me. He’s only wearing sweats and looks fucking gorgeous with his tattoos and piercings on display. Lake grinds again and my dick twitches in interest. “Ugh, well, then he must be having some sexy ass dream then.”
Ev runs his hands through Lake’s hair, a loving expression on his face. When he looks up at me, he turns serious. “He was in a bad place last night, Lo. I’ve never seen him like that.”
My stomach churns as my eyes voluntarily travel to his belly. I can’t see anything with the way Lake’s wrapped in the blankets. “Is the baby . . .” I can’t even finish saying the words.
Ev shakes his head. “I’ll let Lake tell you the story, but the baby is ok. I don’t know if there’s anything else, but he scared me last night, Lo.”
“He’s here now, and we’re here for him. We’ll help him get through whatever’s going on.”
Just then, Lake slides his ass up my groin slowly and a little too deliberately for someone who’s sleeping, and then, as if he isn’t already driving me crazy, he squirms back and forth in small circular motions.
Grinning, I make eye contact with Ev. I haven’t looked at my phone, so I’m not sure what time it is, but with the way the sun is peeking through the blinds, I think it’s probably early morning. “I don’t think our little bird is sleeping anymore.”
Ev continues to comb his fingers through Lake’s hair. “I think you’re right.”
Lake groans. “I need you. Both of you.”
Fuck, I need them too. I’m still a little concerned about the knotting thing, but I’ve been talking to some guys in that group Ev found and I’m feeling a little more comfortable with it. According to some of the guys, I’ll grow more used to it and eventually be able to tell when the knot is able to form, so I can pull out if I want to. And from what they all say, it feels good, even in people without the gene, so I shouldn’t worry about that. It doesn’t mean that I’m not, but it eases my concerns a little.
And now . . . well, fuck, all my instincts are telling me I need to knot Lake. And it seems Lake needs it too.
Ev scrunches his nose at us. “I’m all for this, but first, you two, brush your teeth.”
I whine like a little kid as I tighten my grip around Lake. “But I’m all warm and horny, and you two are right here . . .”
Ev fixes me with an unimpressed expression. “And all of that will be true in a few minutes after your breath doesn’t stink. Go. I already brushed mine while you two lazed about.” His mischievous grin takes the heat out of the words.
Lake and I sigh dramatically but head to the bathroom together. After all, Ev puts up with a lot from us, so the least we can do is humor this little quirk. And he’s not wrong, our breaths do stink.
As we brush our teeth, I take my first chance to really look at Lake. Ev’s right. Despite the lightness of the morning, I can see the tension he’s carrying. Once we’re finished, I crowd Lake against the sink, taking a moment to remind both of us that we’re back together. I nuzzle his neck as I speak.
“I missed you so gods damn much, Little Bird.”
