I don’t want to dissect whatever these feelings are or have a heart-to-heart right now, so I ignore what he says. He must take my silence as his dismissal, because he unfolds his large body from the chair and makes for the door.
“Sit. I wasn’t done,” I say before he can reach it. “Any word on Dante and his men?”
He plops back down in the chair before answering. “We’ve had men tailing him and nothing seems out of the ordinary. He’s still taking his usual meetings and scheduled drops. Our men have him going to Secrets every Tuesday, acting more or less like himself, too.”
Something doesn’t seem right about this, and I tell him so.
“We’re missing something here. What could Dante want with Gia? Surely he has to know that she and Gallo are divorced and he can’t use her to get to him.”
“Maybe that’s it. Maybe he found that out after the failed kidnapping attempt. They could be working a new angle.”
That’s a possibility for sure, but my gut is telling me that’s not the case. I can feel it.
“Keep digging into Dante, and also contact our guard at the prison and check in on Gallo. See if there were any attempts at his life or any threats coming through for him.”
“On it, boss.”
I’m not able to get much work done before my mind wanders back to Gia,mia moglie. My wife.
By 4:30 p.m., my concentration is shot and I’m a little on edge waiting for her. Luigi texted a few minutes ago saying they were on their way home, and since I don’t know what to expect tonight, I decide to call it an early day to get ready for our date.
My first date with my wife.
Never in a million years did I think I would say those words.
CHAPTER16
FABRIZIO
It's justpast seven in the evening, and I’m pacing back and forth in my office, sipping whiskey as I wait for Gia to get ready for dinner. As soon as our eyes met when she walked through the door earlier, the smile she’d been wearing disappeared.
It feels like an eternity down here, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s changed her mind about agreeing to go out. I down the remainder of my whiskey and make my way upstairs. When I get to the bottom of the staircase, I look up, andDio mio…
Gia’s wearing a fitted red dress that hugs every single inch of her curves. It stops mid-thigh, and her tits look like they’re on the verge of spilling out. The thought alone tightens something in my balls. Her short, chocolate-brown hair hangs around her face in soft curls, and when my eyes drop to her full, juicy lips painted a shade of red to match her dress, I know I’m done for. If this woman were to look me dead in the eyes, I’d drop to my knees before her.
As she begins her descent, I walk up to meet her. I clear my throat, trying to compose myself.
“You look beautiful,dolcezza.”
She tries to hide the blush that creeps up her neck and across her cheeks. We meet in the middle of the staircase, and I offer out my hand for her to hold. She stops briefly and looks at my outstretched hand before looking up into my eyes.
My breath hitches and nerves fly through my body waiting for her next move. Before I can begin to decipher what exactly she might be feeling, she slips her small hand into mine.
We make our way out to the Escalade, where Luigi stands with the door open for Gia. I help her in before walking around and getting in on the other side. Marco is seated up front with my driver, Santino. As I move to sit beside her, I feel Gia tense as I slide my arm over her shoulder.
“Dolcezza, look at me.”
She turns her head to look up into my eyes, and I say the first thing that comes to mind.
“I made a promise to keep you safe. I’m a man of my word. You have nothing to fear.”
“Nothing except you,” she replies with a hint of frustration in her voice.
I know I should move over and give her space, but after last night and knowing just how right she feels in my arms, I need to feel her close to me.
* * *
When we pull up outside the restaurant, Gia’s jaw almost hits the floor. I let out a small chuckle at her reaction and know exactly what she’s about to say before the words even leave her mouth.
