“Tessa?”
“Hmmm?”
“Either tell me where I can find Rufus’ treats or more condoms.”
Her gaze flew to his. Although somewhat amused, he seemed quite serious with his warning. “Give it attention, and it responds in kind.”
“His treats are in the mudroom,” she hurriedly replied, her body nowhere near prepared to go another round. “There’s a bin in the lower cupboards.”
“Right.”
She got a good look at his defined butt and sculpted thighs before he pulled up his boxerbriefs and strolled out of her room.
Rolling to her back, smiling, she whispered to the ceiling, “Big Daddyain’t got nothing on my Daddy.”
ChapterTwenty
JORDAN SPENT THE NIGHT. Although he woke her early and, at last, made love to her in a bed—after unearthing an unopened box of condoms from the long-forgotten recesses of her bathroom cupboard—she awoke feeling rested. Rufus, not so much because there was a man in his bed. She had Jordan feed him and hold his leash on his walk—which her boy usually loved—but winning him over was going to take more than a day. By the time they left for work, at least he wasn’t growling every time Jordan looked his way.
They drove in together. Since the gym opened an hour after her bookstore, he hung around sipping a skinny latte and, at her urging, tried one of Angie’s fresh-baked muffins, blueberry lemon this time.
He eyed it warily at first when she set it in front of him.
“Don’t be such a baby,” she scolded, which earned her a not-so-pleased look. “Try a bite for me, please, Daddy.”
The last she said in a whisper, her new, sweeter cajoling approach having better success because he picked up one quarter of the oversized muffin she’d sliced for him and popped it into his mouth.
His eyes widened as he chewed. “Hey. This isn’t wonky at all.”
“They never were wonky,” she replied defensively and took a quarter for herself. “All those gigantic muscles must mess with your taste buds.”
His laughter boomed in the crowded coffee bar, turning heads. “That doesn’t even make sense.”
“Then you’ve had one too many scoops of whey protein in your fruit smoothies.”
“Now, that is a good possibility.” He rose from the table where she’d parked him an hour ago to prep for opening. “It’s time for me to get to work.” Tugging on her hand, he drew her into his arms and brushed his lips against hers in the sweetest of kisses.
