“It’s a really old book. Two of the pages were stuck together and I didn’t notice, so I got the first part of one and the ending of the other.”

The deep rumble of his laughter surrounded her.

“I told you I made a hash of it, which is why I have sworn off magic.”

“That’s the reason?” He slung his arm around her neck and hauled her up against his side then turned them both toward the exit. “Let’s go.”

Unbelievably, the sidewalk was more crowded. But Jordan steered them through it, which she was grateful for.

“What’s happening today?” she asked, noting the bumper-to-bumper Canal St. traffic. “You’d think it was Mardi Gras. Will we be able to get a table at Tableau, do you think?”

“I was going to ask for a rain check.”

“How come?”

“We need to stop by the house on the way back.”

“Did you forget something?”

He gave her hand a yank. Suddenly, Tessa found herself in an alley, sandwiched between a brick wall and Jordan’s big, very aroused body. He laced their fingers together when he raised her hands and pinned them beside her head.

Even in the deep shade of the alleyway, his eyes gleamed their beautiful blue when they gazed into hers. And his voice was thick with need when he replied, “No. Because without spells and potions, my baby girl has inspired my lust.”

She couldn’t speak as desire for him surged through her.

“Give me that sweet mouth.”

“It’s yours, Daddy,” she breathed.

Long minutes later, they wound their way through the crowds filling Canal St. on the way to his truck. Unlike earlier, when she had to run to keep up, Jordan’s pace was a little slower, his grip much tighter because, after their heated exchange in the alley, Tessa’s legs were a lot wobblier.

When he opened the passenger door of his truck for her, and she grabbed the hand grip to hoist herself in, his palm on her bottom gave her a boost.

“Are you sure there’s no such thing as magic?”

His face was next to hers as he leaned in to get her buckled. To see her, he barely had to turn.

“Positive. Why are you asking?”

“Because something has made me fall fast and hard in love with you.”

Stopping what he was doing, he cupped her face with both hands, and his eyes locked with hers. “The only magic I believe in is the kind we conjure together. Do you have enough coverage at the store for the rest of the afternoon?”

She nodded. “Georgia will stay if I ask her to.”

“Then make the call, baby. Because I’ve fallen, too, and, when I get you home, I intend to show you how much.”

Without taking her gaze from the mesmerizing blue of his, Tessa dug in her purse for her phone.
