“You have one hour, McKenzie. After that, you’ll die. He better come soon. If he loves you, I’m sure he will,” he said.

He walked away, and I looked around, fear settling through my body. I was terrified of everything that was going on and what was happening to me.

What the fuck do I do here? What was going to happen to me next? Do I fight this? Or was it better to accept my fate and nothing more?

Panic flowed through me. I saw the water approach me. When it touched my feet, I realized it was ice cold.

The guy would drown me and then freeze me to death, it looked like. I tried to find a way out of there. I had nothing in my pocket, though. I swung my arms toward the edge, but I was unable to do a damn thing.

I was trapped, stuck in this hell, unable to escape. I looked around, the cruel realization hitting me like a freight train.

I could die out here. After all that happened, I would die. But not just that. I wasn’t the only one that would die here. But also…our child. Tears fell from my face as I realized the cruel fate this world gave to me.

I was going to die, and the future that Aaron and I created would be gone too.

“No…please, not like this,” I begged to myself.

At this point, crying, screaming, or panicking was no use. That wouldn’t get me the hell out of here. Instead, it would be just hoping for an escape and that maybe, if there were a way to get out of here, I’d be able to do so.

I didn’t think that there would be, but maybe there was. I could only hope that, with everything that’s been going on, I could have some miracles walk in.

Whether it jumped in and saved me or if it just swooped in like a hero, I didn’t care. I just wanted out of here and to forget about the hell I’d been put through right now.

I prayed. I never was the type to pray, but I hoped for something, anything at all. A goddamn miracle was all that I could do.

“If you’re there, God…it’s me, McKenzie. Please, save me and….”

As I uttered those final words, I heard glass breaking outside. The water slowly rose. By this point, it was halfway up my calf. It was frigid too. I shivered, feeling my legs go numb instantly.

“Please, save me!”

The doors slid open, and gunshots fired throughout the room. They echoed off the walls, and I hid under the little bit of the wall there, hoping I’d be saved.

Suddenly, about five guys in different vests and leather jackets walked inside. They looked around Aaron’s age, and they all looked terrifying. But, right there in the middle was a man with anger in his eyes and a desire to kill.

It was Aaron.

He saved me.

Or at least, that’s what I wanted to believe.

Chapter 18: Aaron

“Howdareyoutouchher!” I cried out.

I rushed inside, dismantling a couple of the grunts at the front. They were simple. You just took them out with sleeper holds and called it a day.

The big challenge was, of course, the ones inside. From what Rollin told me, a bunch of guards sat inside, varying in strength.

The plan was simple. We go in with flanks, take out the guys individually, and from there, we all get to the entrance.

I had the leader, though. I have known Goran from a long time ago.

Goran was a rival and the head of the rangers—a man my age, with a feistiness of a young, spirited man.

I hated the man more than I hated just about anyone out there. He was the reason my family was in danger.

Now, he was coming for my future.
