I reached up and carefully removed it, then kissed his cheek.

Kane stared into my eyes, then his lips crashed against mine. “No one will ever mess with you again.” He pulled me closer to him, my face pressed against his chest as I listened to the steady beat of his heart.

ChapterThirty-Eight

Kane

Ihated myself. I hated that I’d trusted a member of the society, and he’d tried to fuck my girlfriend. I paced the floor in my living room, replaying the events of the previous evening over and over. My hands clenched, recalling how I had punched the bastard until his face was unrecognizable right before I locked him in one of the empty society rooms. Brie was totally fine with role-play, but I hadn’t planned that shit, and his dick wasn’t mine. No one touched her. I barked out a laugh, finally understanding why Jagger was hotheaded. I wasn’t cool with him for a long time because I was the same and refused to admit it.

After I marked her in front of the rest of the society, the team took Jimmy to the river and performed a society baptism, which included nearly drowning him multiple times while threatening his life. Even though Brie had indicated she was open to being watched while someone fucked her, it had been a spur-of-the-moment decision. Not that I would have told her, but after Jimmy pulled his shit, I had to make sure no one else crossed that line with me. Ever.

My phone buzzed in the back pocket of my jeans, and I reached for it, seeing Quinn’s message.

He’s alive but dealt with.

Does he understand if he says one word …

He does. I might have helped him along with that.

I chuckled. Quinn was brutal when someone fucked with his friends on or off the field.

Excellent. Thanks, man.

Little grey dots danced on the screen while I waited for his reply.

Not a thing. We’re brothers.

I tossed my phone on the couch, relieved by the update. At first, I’d been concerned that Jimmy would open his big mouth and turn against the society, but now that I’d heard from Quinn, I felt much better.

My cell buzzed again, and I scooped it up, smiling at the image that popped up on my screen—Brie … naked.

I miss you.

I glanced at the clock.

On my way, beautiful. I just need to grab my duffel bag.

Brie responded with heart emojis.

She had no idea that she was the brightest part of my life and that I would do anything for her. I whistled as I ran up the stairs to my bedroom and tossed clean clothes into my bag. I had toiletries at her place already, so I didn’t have to worry about packing those all the time. Hopefully, she would feel comfortable spending the night here soon.

Twenty minutes later, I rang her doorbell, eager to kiss and hold her.

The door cracked open, then her beautiful blue eyes peeked around the corner. She ushered me inside before she locked up behind me.

“I was about to ask if you were still naked and hiding from the neighborhood, but I can see you’re in yoga pants and a hoodie.”

“I’m so glad to see you.” She pushed up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around my neck.

I tossed my bag onto her couch and pulled her against me.

“You’re the best part of my day, babe.” I leaned down, kissing her gently.

“Mm, you, too. I’m glad you’re staying tonight. I was wondering if you might help me with something. I talked to Alida about it, and she thought it was a good idea.”

I gave her a cautious look. “Is this going to give you nightmares? You’ve been doing really well.” I brushed strands of her blonde hair from her cheek.

“I think it’s because I finally found out where I’m from. That had been tearing me up for the last several years. And …” She glanced away before looking at me again. “I’ve done some research on cults.”
