“But you did,” I growled. “Anyway, what are you going to do about it?”
“I’m just going to enjoy it.” She grinned.
“Great plan.”
“What do you think is happening back there, brothers?” Nick’s voice boomed. It was close enough that I assumed they’d come around the bar’s counter.
“Don’t want to know. They’ve been gone for a while,” Maddox replied.
“Who’s up to betting?” Leo asked.
Meredith pressed her lips together. “Come on, let’s just enjoy the day. And you stop focusing on the two dinners thing, okay? There’s nothing you can do about it, so let it go. At least for now.”
Reluctantly, I stepped back, following Meredith’s lead.
Before I met her, I had a tendency to act upon things right away. If there was a problem, I fixed it. Ideally, I’d like to talk to my brothers or even my grandparents about this dinner thing. But Meredith was right. I had to let it go.
She and I had agreed that our relationship was casual, but I couldn’t deny that it was changing me. There was a before Meredith time and an after Meredith time for me. And I wasn’t sure I’d ever want to go back tobefore.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Meredith
The next day, I knewsomething was weird at the office as soon as I got in. My coworkers were in a frenzy.
What's going on?I headed straight to Sonya’s office.
"Hey, Sonya, our meeting starts in ten minutes."
"Yes, it does."
"Do I need my laptop to take notes?"
"Oh no, you don't. It's going to be short."
I decided to ask her point-blank, since her answers were curt. "Is everything okay? The whole team seems in an uproar."
