I could sense the fire blazing inside me. I was greatly aroused.
We didn’t dare move as the countdown began. We wobbled slightly, clutching each other more tightly in response.
Before the countdown was finished, the other pair already fell. We managed to hold on a little bit more.
Everyone broke into a cheer. Our team members were jumping up and down. The kids surrounded us, forming a group hug with Leigh and me in the center.
It was an amazing feeling, even though it was just some ordinary game. Seeing the children so happy also added to my bliss.
Leigh was smiling from ear to ear, looking like a little kid herself. She was like a brilliant diamond exuding positive energy and great joy.
I’ve never had this much fun in any of my other visits to this orphanage.
“Great game, huh?” I said to Leigh.
“Yes, definitely,” she agreed with a laugh. “Good thing you can balance really well.”
“You too,” I said. “And you weigh like a feather!”
She laughed. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
We both had more fun as we ate together and distributed the school supplies that Luxe Linen had prepared for the kids.
“So you come here a lot?” she asked.
I nodded. I was still contemplating whether to share my past here or not when Jillian came to join us. So then I had to introduce her.
“Carter has always been so generous, even when he was still little,” she said.
Leigh gave her a puzzled look. “You two know each other how?”
Jillian looked a little alarmed because she knew I was a secretive person and didn’t like divulging information about my past. But I didn’t want her to feel bad or awkward, so I explained it to Leigh myself.
“I used to be an orphan here many years ago,” I told Leigh nonchalantly. “Jillian was one of the pioneers. She took very good care of me.”
Her hand flew to her mouth in shock. “Oh, wow. That’s… And now you’re…” She couldn’t even finish her sentences. She was just shaking her head in disbelief.
“He’s an amazing man, isn’t he?” Jillian said teasingly then.
To my amusement, Leigh nodded to agree. “Yes, this is certainly an inspiring story. Perhaps someday you can share it with me, Mr. Croft.”
Was she hinting at seeing me in a friendly, casual manner outside the confines of our work-related activities?
“Of course, Ms. Andrews,” I answered. “Over some drinks, maybe?”
From the corner of my eye, I could see Jillian smiling widely.
Leigh’s brown eyes widened. Then she smiled in a teasing manner and said, “Maybe.”
I’ll take that as a yes.And to my utmost surprise, I felt my pulse quickening. I couldn’t wait to take her out on a date.
Chapter 13
LEIGH
It’sbeentwodayssince we saw each other in that orphanage. He hasn’t called me and I haven’t been seeing him in his house either.
I was disappointed. I thought we’d connected.
