“Yes, I better. Nice to see you again,Remi.”With that, he walks away, but not before flashing my girl a salacious smile as his eyes rake up and down her body. It takes everything in me not to go after him, not to murder him. If my angel didn’t need me right now, I just might.

Grabbing her arm, I pull her towards my car. I don’t care if there are students around, or who might see us. I want everyone to know she’s mine. “He knows you from the club?” I whisper when we’re beside my car.

Remi’s eyes dart around, no doubt looking to see if anyone is watching us. They aren’t. These kids are so self-absorbed, caught up in their own lives, their own drama. “Yes,” she says, her voice robotic as her lip wobbles. I want to pull her into my arms. “What am I going to do, Asher? He was a client at the club and is on the board. He wants to see me. Threatened to expose me if I don’t.”

If I thought I was angry before, it’s got nothing on how I’m feeling now. “He what?” My voice is so low, threatening, it makes my angel startle.

“He asked me if I would do a private for him. Go to his office in town. If I don’t, he said he won’t be responsible for what he tells Principal Abernathy.” She chokes out.

“Get in the car,” I grit as calmly as I can.

“What? No, Asher. Someone will see us. I’ll walk to our meeting point.” Her words are frantic.

“I don’t care. You are in no fit state to walk. Get in,” I demand. Her shoulders slump, and she rounds the car to the passenger side. Flicking the button, the lights flash, and we both open the doors at the same time. Sliding inside, I wait for Remi to buckle up before I start the ignition and pull out of the lot.

Movement out of my peripheral has me glancing over to find my angel bending down towards the footwell. I frown. “What are you doing?”

She huffs. “Hiding. It’s bad enough I got into your car on school grounds. I just hope no one sees me. That’s if they haven’t already.”

“No one saw you, angel.” Even as I say the words, I’m not one hundred percent confident in them. It was reckless of me. But I don’t regret it. There was no way I was letting her walk in the state she’s in.

Pulling up to the house, I get Remi inside as quickly as possible and sit her down on the couch. She looks like she’s in shock. The worry etched in her face is making my heart twist. There are now several people on my list I want to kill for even thinking they can hurt my angel, but Carrington is at the top.

Today has been a shit show. One disaster after another. But I will make it right. For her, I will do anything. “Talk to me, angel.” I drop down on the couch and pull her onto my lap.

She buries her head in my neck and sniffles. Anger surges through me. How dare these people make her feel this way? “How could I be stupid enough to think I could have a normal life?” She laughs, but it’s humorless. “My life hasn’t been normal for a long time.”

Gently tugging on her ponytail, I bring her eyes to mine. “You are not stupid, and I will fix this.”

Her glassy eyes watch me. “How? You can’t do anything, Asher. Not without our relationship coming out. I won’t go to that man’s office, so I guess I just need to accept that he will out me, and I’ll lose my scholarship. It was inevitable, really. The moment I met you and found out you worked at the school, I knew I would have to give one up eventually, and it isn’t going to be you. I just didn’t think I would be forced into having it taken away by some guy who thinks he can blackmail me because he saw me dance half naked.”

I drop a kiss to her forehead, hating that she feels like this. “You’re not having it taken away from you. I won’t allow it. And I will not be given up. I can assure you of that.”

She shakes her head with a smile, and it’s like staring at the sun. Beautiful. “You’re crazy.”

“Crazy about you,” I say, making her smile wider. Sighing, I pull her in closer. There is something else we need to discuss. Something that is unexpected, but important. I know my angel doesn’t need any more stress right now, but I won’t keep this from her. “I spoke with Brody.”

Her eyes dart to mine, and she swallows. “And?”

“You’re never going to believe it, but it turns out…” I take a breath, preparing for the next words out of my mouth. I still can’t believe it myself. “He’s in love with me.”

She stares at me. Her jaw drops open. “W-what?”

“Yeah. He admitted to it. Told me that’s why he slept with Cali, to get her out of my life.” I run my free hand down my face, then hit my angel with a serious look. “He wants me to break up with you, said I won’t like the consequences if I don’t. Obviously, that is not going to happen, but I do need you to transfer out of his class, Remi. I have a bad feeling about what he’ll do. He was quite adamant about him and me. The guy is delusional. I don’t know how I never saw it. I mean, he has always been interested in girls.” I scrub a palm down my face, over this day.

“Now that I think about it, it makes sense. Some of the things he said to me were not adding up, but now they do.” She chews her bottom lip in thought before sighing. “Jesus. We have so many things against us right now.”

“I know. But we’ll get through it. There’s no other way,” I tell her honestly.

She cups my face, and determination flashes in her eyes. “There is no other way. I won’t be without you.”

For the first time today, I smile. Her words mean everything. “And I won’t be without you. Over my dead body will I let anyone take you from me. I love you, angel.” I brush my lips against hers.

“I love you too.”
