We moved through the jungle amid the calls and whistles and cries and groans from the darkness.
I recognized at least half a dozen that came from the throats of dangerous creatures.
I kept my wits about me in case one or more decided to try their luck.
None did — not least because I was far too large for most to attack.
Lizzy, on the other hand, was the perfect size for some of the larger creatures to swallow for a single meal.
Over my dead body.
We emerged from the jungle and the lawn spread out to either side of us.
The soft yellow light from the mansion windows spilled across the lawn, forming long rectangles.
I had never understood why James had decided to go with softer lighting rather than the technologically superior ion lights most popular throughout the galaxy…
But I had to admit, the mansion did look a lot more welcoming than the ion fare.
I smiled over at Lizzy and wondered what our relationship would be like now that we were home.
Home.
It seemed crazy to think of the mansion that way as it had always been my place of work.
But with Lizzy as my fated mate, what other word was there for it?
We returned the G'kood to the stables.
As we crossed the open plains of the lawn, I wanted to take Lizzy by the hand… but there were far too many servants around.
We would need to be careful… at least, at first.
Until we figured out how we wanted to handle the situation.
And that could only happen after I explained to Lizzy about our Joisa and what it meant for the two of us.
We entered the mansion and a servant quickly approached us.
“Uhti?” the servant said. “There’s someone to see Lizzy in the main drawing room.”
“This late?” I said.
“He said it’s urgent.”
I looked over at Lizzy, who stifled a yawn. “Who is it? No one knows I’m here.”
“He said you would recognize him when you saw him,” the servant said.
Lizzy rolled her eyes. “Fine. I’ll see him. Where is this main drawing room?”
“I’ll take you,” I said.
I couldn’t deny the fear that roiled within my stomach at whoever this mysterious stranger might be.
For some reason, it reminded me of the feeling I had when I laid eyes on Lizzy’s photo all those years ago.
Then, it had been a sweet sensation, one I longed to cling to as often as I could.
