He led me toward the door leading to the Mating Rooms at the back where most of the other mating pairs had already disappeared.

Some of the males were still fighting among themselves but I paid them no attention.

I looked over at my mate and realized that, ifIhad been the one to choose, I couldn’t have picked a better mate.

I only hoped I wouldn’t disappoint him during his Steyatt.

As I ran my eyes over his hard, toned physique and buns of steel, I couldn’t help but snicker giddily to myself.

I knewImost certainly wouldn’t!

Finally!The female was mine!

I had caught her scent the moment the door had opened.

The rest of the baying creatures, lacking any self-control at all, scrambled and fought and clawed to be the first to enter the Claiming Room.

Up until that point, I had thought them nothing but mindless beasts, as predictable as they were stupid, completely at the whims of their Steyatt.

But the moment I caughtherscent, a fury I had never known swept over me.

A desire beyond all words.

Ihadto have her.

Ineededto have her.

And in that instant,Ibecame one of those same baying monsters, forcing my way through them, and would have cut every last one down just so I could reach her.

My mate.

I couldn’t think through what I was feeling, couldn’t make sense of it, couldn’t understand it…

My only concern was getting to her first, to ensureIClaimed her, and that none of the other creatures could drag her from the room before I reached her.

One of the larger beasts broke free and slipped into the room first while the other monsters continued hammering at each other.

Each time I attempted to force my way forward, I got pushed back.

There was no way to remove the blockage until I hurled myself at it, howling with fury that at that moment one of the males — the one who had managed to slip into the room — could choose any female he wished…

Including my female!

In my mind, that was how I saw her.

She was not a single female among many.

She was alreadymine.

She belonged to me.

Through the thick mist of my Steyatt, I could recall the rules of the Claiming.

So long as the female was still within the Claiming Room, she had still not yet been selected.
