I didn’t need my newly inherited wealth, I knew. I neededthem.
And then it occurred to me.
Thewealth.
Themoney.
Thepower.
Could that be what the Hive really wanted from me?
By assimilating me… would they then come into possession of it?
I assumed so.
After all, I was still alive, and as far as the law was concerned, remained a sentient being.
So long as the Hive was in charge of me, it meant they would control the empire.
But they were shit out of luck if that was the case.
I still haven’t signed the paperwork!
It didn’t belong to me yet!
The needle was out no further than the tip of my nose and if I was going to do something, I had better do it fast.
“My father’s wealth isn’t mine yet!” I said.
“Physical wealth means nothing to us,” the blonde said. “Wealth lies in the hearts and minds of others. The Hive mind.”
The needle continued to draw closer.
Was I wrong then?
What else was different about my situation now than before?
Nothing, so far as I could figure.
I decided to push on.
“I never signed the contract!” I said. “My father’s wealth won’t pass to me as I didn’t sign!”
“Relax,” the blonde said. “This will be over in a moment.”
Relax with a needle in my brain?
Were these people insane?
“Assimilate me and you’ll never take possession of the fortune!” I shrieked.
This time, the blonde didn’t say anything.
But the needle continued drawing nearer.
I blinked and felt it on my eyelashes
I squealed and gripped the bed with my palms, my body working on automatic to prepare for the ensuing pain.
