I fell into the seat opposite and nodded to a servant for him to fill my wine glass.

I let out a sigh of content. “Lizzy will be a little late,” I said.

Uhti only nodded.

He hadn’t so much aslooked upat me when I entered the room.

“Is everything… all right?” I asked, tasting the wine and, finding it delicious, gulped down a big mouthful before asking for a refill.

“Of course,” Uhti said sharply. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

I only shrugged my shoulders.

I wasn’t about to let him bring me down.

The evening had begun spectacularly and I wouldn’t let him ruin it.

We sat in silence until Lizzy came and we each got to our feet.

She wore a gorgeous dress with a long train that dragged along the ground behind her.

It was silver and shimmered even with the dim candlelight, and clung to her figure even better than the bathrobe had earlier.

Her hair was done up in a simple style.

I couldn’t believe I was so lucky to have found such a gorgeous female to be my fated mate.

Lizzy giggled and placed her hand on his forearm and leaned into him.

He seemed comfortable with her touch as he bowed his head forward slightly.

Then his eyes flicked up to me and immediately glanced away again.

He pulled back from Lizzy and smiled politely before leading her to her chair at the head of the table and tucking it under her as she sat down.

My mood turned dark as I realized what I had just witnessed.

Lizzy’s touch hadn’t been one of a friendly touch but had lingered… and lingered for far too long for my liking.

And the look on Uhti’s face was one not only of conflict… but disquiet and unease… of a great deal of sadness.

It was confusing and difficult to understand but I thought I read the main thrust of its meaning well enough.

It was printed clearly in his eyes and the way he and Lizzy had smiled at each other.

The blood drained from my face as I realized the significance of it…
