The floor shook and the door rattled on — now that I took a closer look at it — hinges that had been replaced at least half a dozen times.

Just when the noise rose to a cacophony so loud it made my eardrums hurt, the door swung open and smashed against the Claiming Room wall with a deafeningcrack!

The male creatures paused for just a moment — not out of choice but at the fact they had managed to get themselves jammed in the doorway.

They each reached through with grasping hands and claws and hooves, raging to get through first.

It was not a reassuring sight. They were going to tear us to shreds!

But the Assistants dotted about the room didn’t seem too perturbed — as if this were just another day at the office!

Finally, one of the beasts got a little leverage and smashed another of the other creatures in the face with its bony hooked elbow, and raced through the doorway.

After that, it was a flood.

The creatures thundered across the narrow open space that separated us.

The first creature — a huge hairy minotaur-like monster with flaring nostrils and pierced ears — shoved one of the other females toward the door at the distant end of the room.

The poor thing just stared up at the creature forcing her forward with a terrified expression on her face.

All I could imagine was the huge male sliding inside her and riding her into oblivion with its frantic desire to quench its thirst to sate its Steyatt.

The other males rushed across the open space and lashed out with hands and claws, dragging one female after another toward the open door and the suites beyond.

My heart thundered in my chest and ears. I don’t mind admitting I was absolutely bricking myself.

I considered changing my mind and telling the Assistants that this wasn’t what I had signed up for… except itwaswhat I had signed up for.

We all knew what we had signed up for.

No romance.

No getting to know each other.

But Seed.And plenty of it.

One by one, the males carted the females away. Some carried their females over their shoulders. Others wrapped them tightly in long snake-like bodies…

And I wondered which would Claim me.

For a split second, I fearednonewould choose me. Maybe they would sense there was something wrong with me. Maybe none of them would find me attractive…

I hastily shoved my emotional baggage to the back of my mind.

Now is not the time!I berated myself.

I became aware of a large creature standing over me with skin that seemed to shiver with fire.

Its eyes were so black they made a mockery of the depths of space. More like a shark’s dead doll’s eyes than anything I associated with a living, breathing creature.

I could never lose myself in them.

When he reached out with his claw to grab me, I froze with fear. I doubted I could fight him off even if I wanted to.

His skin was fiery and hot. I could feel the heat emanating from it from where I was standing.

He hadn’t yet touched me, although it wasn’t without trying.
