“You mean, am I out of my psychosis?” she laughed. “Yes, after what we did, I never thought I would feel again. For years I was numb, seeing the world through a haze I couldn’t interact with. Now, I feel. Thanks to Joseph, I am wanted. He enjoys it when I’m around. He really is such a good kid.”

Tears rolled down my cheek. “We needed you, we wanted you. Dottie and I enjoyed you.”

“No, you two only ever needed each other. I was mad at you for years for killing my husband and having me drag the body for six blocks to bury. While I fell into myself, you two helped each other.” She wiped the tears from my face. “I never should have put you in a position to have to take care of me.”

“I’m sorry,” I sobbed.

“Enough of the past. Why did you come in here crying?” She tucked my hair behind my ear and half-smiled.

“I just found out Ethan married me to get his inheritance. I know I shouldn’t care, but I thought he was falling for me,” I replied. It was the first time I had ever had a mother-daughter moment with her.

“My teenage daughter had to kill my husband to protect me. I am not the person to give out relationship advice,” she said. Just like that, our moment was over.

“I know. So, no matter what, I have to marry them tomorrow. I was wondering if you would give me away.” I had been meaning to ask her and hadn’t gotten around to it.

“Oh, I would. It’s just I already told Joseph him and I would walk down together.” She averted her eyes.

“Right, right. Um…no biggie.” I stood and wiped the tears that wouldn’t stop. “Look, I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay, don’t worry. You’ll figure out your boy problems.” My mother crawled back into bed and pulled the blanket over her.

I speed-walked down the hall, avoiding everyone. A few times, I had to turn around because a worker looked like they were about to talk to me. I had to get out of there. The mansion was quickly becoming a prison. Ha, people would die for this lifestyle, and I was complaining about it.

Once I was outside, I took off down the driveway and kept walking. I wasn’t sure where to go, but I wouldn’t be back till I had to.

CHAPTER37

Adam (Day 6)

I rolled aroundon the floor with Ethan. He slammed his head into mine, damn that thing was hard. Laughing, I pulled back and punched him. A few workers screamed and ran. Apparently, seeing two elites fight was new to them.

Ethan was pulled off of me. I looked to see Tristan tossing Ethan backward. Ha, he deserved that, hitting me because I hurt his feelings. Screw him.

“What is going on?” Tristan looked from Ethan to me.

“Your friend is a maniac. Attacked me because he is sensitive,” I panted.

“You need to learn to shut your mouth.” Ethan leaned over. “You’re just mad that Ava hates you.”

“I hate her too.” I raised my hands and dropped them.

“Speaking of her, where did she go?” Ethan asked.

“I’m guessing she ran off after you hit me.” I ran the back of my hand across my mouth. It wasn’t as much blood as I expected.

“Fuck, I gotta find her.” Ethan turned and left.

I should have chased after him and continued our fight. He really needed his ass kicked. Maybe then he wouldn’t walk around all high and mighty.

Tristan nodded his head at me and followed Ethan. He never said much to me if he could help it. After the fire, he visited me once. He thanked me for trying to save his wife and told me if I ever needed anything, all I had to do was ask. Since the limo incident, I was pretty sure that offer was over. Oh well, it was a sight to see.

I pulled out my phone and checked Ava’s location. It was another reason I sent her a phone, I could keep track of her. The last thing I needed was for her to run away, and then both our lives would be put in danger for not performing our matrimonial duties.

Ava was already over a mile away. I should have learned from the fire not to chase women around. Instead, I kept the tracker open on my phone and went to my car. It was already blocked in by multiple delivery trucks. The wedding would be too much of a show of wealth. I despised everything about it.

Since my car was blocked in, I took off on foot. It didn’t take long for my leg to bother me. I really should have listened to Damar and did my PT. Of course, until I had met Ava, I wasn’t doing much physical activity. She really did put a strain on my whole life.

I checked the phone, she was already close to the center of town. What! Was she running?Ugh, at this rate it would take forever to get to her.I should have called Brian. He would have picked me up and driven me to her. It would have been quicker. Had it not been his day with his mother, I would have. It was part of his routine.
