“Are you okay?” She pulled away from me. “It’s me, Vickie.”

Ch. 11 Kira and the dream

Ipushed her away. There was no way she was here. There was no way she would have stayed after everything I gave up for her.Why would she do that?I wanted to strangle her. Hit her. Do something.

“Sit down.” She tried to escort me to the bench.

“I don’t need help. What are you doing here?” I slapped her hand away. “I told you to go.”

“Kira, you are my only family. You are it. I have no one else.” She picked up the puppy and started stroking his short cream fur.

“What does that have to do with why you are here?” I snapped. This was all wrong. She shouldn’t be here.

“Did you really think I was going to leave you? Never.” She sat on the bench. “After these knuckleheads took you I waited for you. I thought you would have escaped. I waited and waited. Then they found me and offered me a job. I won’t leave without you.”

Yea, she could be stubborn, but I thought she would listen. I thought she would have left. I would have caught up with her when I had the chance. Now that she was here everything was ruined. I would have to break us both out when the time came.

Since most of her skin was exposed in the skimpy uniform, I inspected it. It was the first time since she started hooking that she didn’t have a single bruise. Even the customers that she claimed were gentle, weren’t. They all left marks. A smile played in the corner of her lips.

She was happy. Like, really happy. It was a tiny miracle in itself. Being employed by The Trips meant she didn’t have to sell herself to strangers. It made me thankful for them. It wasn't Mexico, but until I could get us there, she was safe.

Vickie set down the puppy and pulled me out of earshot from Derek. Until this point he was just observing and listening to everything.

“Look, I know you think Mexico is our freedom, but this life isn’t so bad. They told me if you just give back what you stole then you are free to go or stay. They would employ us both. Could you imagine? Legit jobs for both of us.” Vickie stared into my eyes, pleading with me.

Was she right? Was this so terrible?People would do anything for a job like this. We could even try and work our way up to stay on the property. Our lives would be different, better even. It was my birthday wish coming true.

I shook my head. It wasn’t enough for me. Vickie and I deserved total freedom. Not a life where we would always be homeless. No. We needed to get out of here. We needed to go to a place where The Elite and The Rich didn’t rule everything. Mexico had a government and housing for all. We had to go. The only way to afford it was to sell that bag to Carlos.

“No, I’m sorry, but I will get us out. We deserve the best life. In Mexico we would just be people. Not homeless.” I pulled Vicki into me. “Trust me, I’ll get us both out.

“Time to go,” Derek said.Did he hear us?

I turned to scan his face. Nothing had changed. He still wore that happy smirk. If he had heard, he wasn’t acting like he did.

“Can’t I stay a little longer?” I batted my eyes at him.
