“What’s that for? I asked.

“Antibiotics. It’s to stop the infection. I’m also gonna have to numb your back. Those thorns need to be removed and the wounds cleaned. It looks like at least one of them is gonna need stitches, maybe two.” She jabbed the needle in my arm. “You may have gone septic. I don’t know how you are still functioning at this point.”

I like the way she talked to me. She didn’t talk down to me like I was a homeless person. She made me feel like an equal, or maybe the infection was messing with my head.

She pressed a thermometer to my head. When she pulled it away she tsk’d. “How long has she been like this? This looks like days!” She snapped at the men.

They all looked to the ground, ashamed.

“Maybe a couple days.” Aiden raked his hand across his face. “Is she gonna be okay?”

“I don’t know.” The Doc jabbed another needle into my arm.

The world grew fuzzy. It was as if someone put a sheet over everything. I tried to move. My eyes drooped. Nothing was working. The Doc faded in and out.

“The infection is bad,” The Doc whispered.

My mother was there. She drifted over to me as if she was an angel. Her long blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders. I reached out to her. She grabbed my hand and kissed it.I’m here.

I blinked and she was gone. Aiden was holding my hand. Derek was caressing my hair. Jason cupped my face. They were all there by the bedside. Worry spread across their faces. It was as if they cared. I must have been in worse shape than I thought.

“I’m here,” Aiden whispered. His lips grazed my hand.

It was the last thing I heard before I went to sleep.

Ch. 9 Aiden and the brothers

Igrabbed the tennisball from my desk. Tossing it from hand to hand didn’t do shit for my stress. I wanted to scream, punch something, hurt someone, fuck someone. Anything to stop myself from thinking of that nuisance that walked into my life.

“Fuck!” I chucked the tennis ball at the wall.

The door swung open.

“Woah.” Derek ducked down, avoiding the ball.

“Ouch.” Jason rubbed his chest. He hadn’t been so lucky.
