FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYSI stayed in my cell. The Triplets tried to talk to me. Well, Derek and Jason did. I ignored them. They all had me mesmerized for a moment. I couldn’t let that happen again.

They had even brought Vickie down to my cell. She tried to talk to me. It took everything in me to ignore her. I had to. She would have convinced me to give up the bag. To stay here. Part of me wanted to. It would have been easier. I couldn’t do that. Vickie and I needed a better life even if she didn’t realize it.

Pat even tried talking to me. He was so nice and I considered him as close to a friend as anyone had been except Vickie. He would bring my food in and ramble about how great life could be here. I wouldn’t even look up from my book to pay attention.

I stayed reading. The books transported me to different worlds. I devoured them. Pretending to be the people in the novels. It was easy to pretend my life wasn’t real.

Ch. 14 Kira and the talk

Someone came barrelingdown the stairs. Their footprints sounded like a bulldozer taking down a house. I kept reading my book. Whatever was going on was none of my business.

“Open the gate!” Vickie's small voice sounded loud for once.

I did not want to see her.

The gate slid open. I kept my face in my book refusing to look up at her.

My book was ripped from my hands and tossed across the room.

Vickie and Pat stood there. Both had scowls on their faces and their arms crossed. With the uniform they looked like angry bumble bees.

I took the blanket, put it over my head and rolled to the side.

That too was ripped from my grasp.

“Get up!” Vickie snapped. She didn’t yell, like ever. It wasn’t in her. As long as I had known her she had never raised her voice.

Maybe it was the way she yelled at me, or the fact that she yelled at me at all. Maybe it was because I was being a shitty friend to her. Whatever the reason, I got up. I was sluggish from having spent so much time in bed.

Vickie linked her arm in mine and Pat grabbed my other side. After a weird side shuffle they whisked me out of the cell and up the basement stairs. I glanced back to see who had been watching me but I wasn’t sure. It was one of the triplets but with only seeing their face, I didn’t know which one it was.

They brought me outside into the backyard with the beautiful landscapes. The puppy from the other day bunny hopped over to me. His ears flopped in the wind and I was afraid he would be taken away like a feather. I bent down and gave him some love.

I knew Vickie and Pat wanted to talk, but I was putting it off for a few more minutes at least. Whatever it was it felt heavy and I wasn’t ready for it.

“We need to talk,” Vickie said. Her voice was back to her soft fairy sounds.
