I wished I could see his face, but Selena was still only wearing one of my shirts, and I was done showing her body to anyone she didn’t choose to. If I had it my way, we’d be the only three who ever saw it again.

“I’ve heard of them. Bunch of misguided Omegas trying to do some good and going about it all the wrong way. Usually get themselves and the people they recruit into more trouble than it’s worth.”

“Sounds familiar,” Sebastian said, words dripping with sarcasm and rage.

“They’re after the hormones,” Nick said. “From Normality—”

“Yeah. I can see why.” Jensen didn’t even let him finish. “We’ve been getting reports that Normality is trying to use high doses to force a change in designation. So far though, it hasn’t worked. The people just die. It’s being written off as some weird overdose, but that’s not what it is. What does this have to do with you, though?”

“That’s what they’re doing?” Selena asked.

Her eyes were bleary, and her face still tucked into my chest, but she was now awake and listening.

“Are the designation changes voluntary?” Nick asked.

Jensen laughed. “No. Not as far as I know.”

“Last question,” Nick scrubbed his hand over his face, “and I promise I’ll clarify. Do we have any way to identify who Normality is using to do these tests?”

“I don’t personally, but I’m sure the squad tracking Normality does. As soon as we’re done with the network, it’s their turn. So they’re running on borrowed time, anyway.”

Nick nodded. “The Syndicate sent someone to find Normality through us because I’m guessing they don’t have any of that information. But the person they sent in was innocent, and is being blackmailed. We’d like to give them what they asked for and make sure the correct person gets what’s coming to them.”

Selena reached up and touched my cheek. I looked down at her, momentarily getting lost in those big green eyes. “I work at Saint Mercy’s,” she said quietly. “Or at least I did before I was taken. I don’t know if they’ve fired me yet after not showing up to work for a week. The Syndicate said they made an excuse, but I don’t know what it would be.”

I lifted her higher and kissed her forehead. “Jensen,” I raised my voice so he could hear me. “Check the overdose deaths from the last two weeks at Saint Mercy’s here in the city. It will be a good place to start. If you can give us a name connected with the deaths, and before that, we’ll be grateful.”

“I can do that,” Jensen said. “I’ll be very interested in hearing whatever story you have. I’m sure you’ve got a hell of a lot of them.”

“Most of them don’t bear repeating,” Sebastian said. “But thank you.”

“The four of you keep your heads down,” Jensen said. “This will all be over soon.”

Nick ended the call, and I pulled Selena upward and closer, cradling her more thoroughly to my chest. “We’re going to find out who it was, gattina.”

“Thank you.” She sighed and snuggled down into me. “I love you.”

My heart stuttered. Until now, she hadn’t said it, and my guilt still ran deep enough that I didn’t believe we deserved it. I met my pack mates’ eyes and knew they felt the same.

“Let’s go upstairs,” I whispered. “You’re exhausted, and everything will be over soon.”

“Mmmk.” She was fading down again, and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.

Standing, we gathered our things, and Sebastian opened the office door for me. We all froze, suddenly on alert. Christopher Delano and his entire group of men stood there with guns trained on us.

SELENA

The shift in the air brought me fully awake, along with the change in my Alpha’s scents.

Not to mention the very distinct sound of guns being cocked. I didn’t dare look toward the door, but I looked up at Derek, and he was pale. His throat worked as he swallowed. “Delano.”

“I told you I didn’t want to see you until the shipment arrived,” Nick said.

“And I decided I wasn’t going to take orders from you,” Delano said. “Not after what I found out.”
