Go After Him

“Happy birthday, Abby,” Megan said, walking into her parents’ house. “How does it feel to be sixteen now?”

“It’s awesome, Aunt Megan. I can’t wait to start driving.”

“We can wait,” Tom said. “Abby is already making demands for a car. No, thank you.”

Megan didn’t say anything about that. Not her life. Her parents had bought a car for Emily and Sarah to share and then when her time came, she got one too. Nothing fancy but something to get her around and to her part-time job.

“How are you doing, Charlie and Tyler?” she asked her nephews. “Sophia? You too. Everyone enjoying their summer?”

“We are,” Charlie said. “Tyler and I have been going to soccer camp.”

Which she knew and those two boys were inseparable. She was happy they had that. “What about you, Sophia? Have you been doing much?”

“No,” Sophia said. “Just hanging out with my friends. Carla has a pool, so I spend more time there than home.”

“That’s the best way to spend the summer,” she said.

“What about you, Megan?” Sarah asked. “Anything exciting going on? You were in a wedding a few months ago, right?”

“I was,” she said. “It was great. Raina made a beautiful bride.”

“Do you have pictures?” her mother asked. “You never did show me anything.”

Her parents didn’t always seem so focused on her friends anymore other than to say everyone was settling into life more than her.

“I’ve got pictures on my phone,” she said. “But Raina sent me the link of the wedding photos and they are much nicer.”

She pulled her phone out, found the link and then handed it to her mother to look.

“You look lovely in your dress,” her mother said. “Doesn’t she, Kevin?”

Her father walked over and looked. “She does, Tammy. Looks like you did at that age.”

“I wish I was that thin at Megan’s age, but I’d had two kids already.”

Yep, there was the first comment.

“Us too,” Emily said. “You just wait, Megan. When your time comes, you’ll be older and it’s harder to lose the weight.”

“I’m not thinking of that,” she said. “But remember, I work out much more than you guys do.”

“I don’t have time,” Sarah said. “I was too busy caring for two young kids and working.”

“Is this the guy you were paired up with?” her mother asked.

She was waiting to see if her mother would say anything when she got past the pictures of the girls.

“Yes. That’s Jonah, Raina’s brother.”

“He looks like a barbarian. Good lord, you look like a child next to him,” her mother said.

“Let me see, Mom,” Emily said.

“Wow,” Emily said. “He’s pretty hot.”

Tom cleared his throat and walked over to look. “If you like that type.”
