“And you’re the one that gets to be the hero for your niece?” Raina asked.
“Yep and the bad guy to Tom. Because you know, they’d expect no different than me going against something he doesn’t like.”
“That does suck. What are you going to do?” Raina asked.
“My sister told me to get them. I listen to her, not Tom. If she has to play those games in her marriage that is on her, not me. I don’t live her life.”
“Guess that is the life you’d get if you settled for a nice boring accountant or engineer.”
“You’re going to be one of those boring engineers at some point,” she said.
“I am,” Raina said. “I can’t wait. But Cody knows that about me already.”
This might be a good opening to tell Raina about her and Jonah, but there were just too many people walking around. One of them being Grant Fierce who came to their table.
“Ladies,” Grant said. “How are you doing this lovely Friday afternoon?”
“Great,” Raina said. “You?”
“Awesome as always. More so because I get to have time with my grandson and granddaughter tomorrow. Your niece and nephew.”
“I heard,” Raina said. “Tommy was talking to Cody last night online when they were playing games. He said he was spending Saturday night with Riley because his parents had to go on a date night. Then he made a bunch of gagging sounds.”
“Kids,” Grant said. “In a few years he won’t think it’s so gross.”
“Most likely not,” Raina said. “Though I don’t think Marissa or Ryder are pushing that.”
“Highly unlikely,” Grant said. “And what about you, Megan? How are you doing?”
“Doing good,” she said. “I’ll be spending time with my nieces and nephews on Sunday too.”
“I’m sure your parents are waiting for some grandkids, right, Raina?” Grant asked.
“They aren’t pushing. Or at least not me. I think they thought one of the boys would be settled down by now, but that isn’t my problem.”
“Why is it a problem?” Megan asked.
“It’s not,” Raina said. “Just that the boys get to deal with that headache. When they are ready for someone, they’ll figure it out on their own. Just like I told Garrett the other day.”
She frowned. “Garrett was talking to you about your brothers?”
“Yes,” she said. “I know my mother was talking to you guys about setting them up. There aren’t many secrets in my family.”
Megan felt her face flush over that. “Always good to know,” Grant said. “Yes, your mother would like to see your brothers with a nice young woman.”
She didn’t like Grant’s eyes on hers.
“I told Garrett when they found someone, they’d let everyone know if that person was going to stick around,” Raina said. “Most times they do their own thing. They date and all, but no reason I need to know who they bring home after a few dates.”
Not what she wanted to hear. But it’s not like she thought Jonah was thinking that with her. He’d told her it’d be up to her when to tell his sister, so she was hoping that meant she didn’t fall into the category of someone he just brought home and slept with.
Might be something they would have to talk about tonight.
“Maybe they want your approval,” Grant said.
Raina laughed. “My brothers don’t need my approval. But I’ll say to you what I did to Garrett: you obviously have someone in mind. Do I know them? Do you want my approval first before you start working that magic you all say you’ve got?”
Megan burst out laughing. It was the way Raina said it. Her friend would have never made that remark years ago nor would she have added that inflection to her tone.
