Chuckling, I went back to the couch and smoked a tiny pipe. Alone with River, I didn’t need anything else. Faced with a house full of belligerent O’Brian’s, I needed all the help I could get.

River didn’t smoke any more. He stole a pair of my socks—he’d forgotten to pack any in the bag he’d brought from Porth Luck—and returned to the couch. “How far out are they?”

I opened my mouth to tell him I had no idea, but a key crunching the lock cut me off.

Seconds later, Cam strode into my living room, tall, grumpy, and handsome. I could hardly see Orla behind him. Smelt her, though. As unsexy as I found her sexiness, she was the sweetest scented woman to walk this earth.

Saint was with them.

It boggled my mind that Alexei didn’t think that warranted a warning too. Saint was many things, but unremarkable wasn’t one of them.

My living room was suddenly full.

Orla joined me on the couch. Cam hugged River, then came to me and stooped to pull me close. “You okay?”

“Yup.”

“No cabin fever?”

“Not yet.”

Cam snorted and straightened. Then he dropped into the armchair a few feet away.

Saint and River loitered by the door, not speaking, but shifty as fuck.

I caught River’s gaze.

He ran his tongue along his bottom lip and disappeared into the kitchen.

Fucker.

I sighed and faced Cam. “To what do I owe the royal visit?”

Cam spun his phone on the arm of the chair. “You wouldn’t visit me if I was holed up somewhere? At least I knocked.”

“You didn’t knock.”

“Oops.” The O’Brian sarcasm was strong. The grouchy humour. Then Cam scratched his dark beard and leaned forward. “We’ve got shit to talk about I didn’t want to use the phones for. You check this place for bugs when you got here?”

“Nope.”

Cam rolled his eyes and jerked his head at Saint. “Get it done, I ain’t got all day.”

“Somewhere better to be?”

“Always. Unless you want me to hang around. I can make it happen, brother.”

“Do what you like, mate.”

“Uh-huh.”

Beside me, Orla made an impatient noise and poked me in the same motion that saw her boot flick out and kick Cam in the shin. “Stop being dickheads. Have you got any food? I’m starving.”

I pried her long nails out of my ribcage. “Help yourself, luv.”

Orla rose and followed River into the kitchen, leaving me alone with Cam.

It wasn’t awkward. We had too much history for that. But I didn’t know what the fuck to say to him. Maybe, thanks for putting my life on hold for ten years. Your brother fixed everything by banging me in every room of this house.
