“I eat, breathe, and sleep my job,” she confessed.
“What if you don’t go in?” I prompted.
“Well, I cut my day short yesterday to be here,” she said wistfully, curling her hands into fists as she moved on top of me. “And I have so much to do this week.”
“But I could maybe spare an hour more?” she said softly, dragging her lips against my neck as she ground her hips on top of me.
I sucked in a breath and closed my eyes, wrapping my arms around her waist as I kissed her.
Right when she straddled me and I didn’t think my morning could get any better, her phone chimed, and she shot off me so fast to grab it, I thought I’d gotten a rug burn from the flannel.
“Oh, crap,” she muttered, glancing at her phone.
I sat up in bed and pulled up the sheet to my waist. “Everything okay?”
“That dirtbag of an ex—” She stopped herself. “I mean my BFF’s ex.”
I couldn’t help but smile as she’d apparently remembered our chat about his still being the father of her BFF’s child.
“Sent her a letter to vacate the premises.”
I frowned. “He can do that?”
She shook her head. “No, but he did it anyway. It’s like you’ve already cheated on her, abandoned her and your baby, and now you just want to rub it in a bit more?”
Lucy fumed over the series of texts that ran over her screen. “He feels that he and his new girlfriend need the space more because it’s closer to his office.”
I shook my head. “What does that have anything to do with things?”
“Exactly. It doesn’t. But now, I have to run interference with a judge and...” She let out an aggravated grunt. “This sucks. I mean, it’s hard enough right after giving birth, and if I could get that man in an alley...”
I laughed and shook my head. “Is there anything I can do to help besides bring the shovel?”
She glanced at her pile of clothes on the floor and smiled. “I’m just sorry I have to leave.”
“I totally understand.”
And I did, but I also realized that Lucy’s life was work, and work was Lucy’s life.
She let out a sigh. “It’s probably better to go into the office before you have your way with me again.”
I choked a laugh and shook my head. “My way with you? You mean Mr. Coitus to the rescue?”
Lucy rolled her eyes and started to unbutton the flannel shirt. “The phrase was ‘Master of Coitus’.”
“Ah, right. I’ll have to remember that.”
She slid off my shirt, her full breasts lifting slightly as she put her hair back in a quick braid before she bent over and picked up her clothes.
“Do you promise me a raincheck?” she asked, pulling on her jeans.
“I would be the luckiest guy in Seattle.”
“You know, I was thinking.”
I laughed and shook my head. “I don’t know why that worries me.”
“Since this is more my experiment, I don’t want you to feel like you have to be monogamous. I don’t want you to miss out onthe oneif she just so happens to rotate into your orbit during our little sessions.”
