I rolled my eyes and laughed. “Always will be.”

He slid his hand into mine. “I don’t know if your stomach is up for it, but I made scrambled eggs and bacon.”

“It sounds incredible.”

“Ah, the words of a true hangover patient.” He squeezed my hand as we walked into the dining room. Even though it was a gloomy day outside with clouds lingering low, it felt like the brightest day I’d experienced in a long time.

I felt free.

As I sat down, he scooped up some eggs and placed some bacon on a plate for the both of us before sitting down next to me.

“You know, I want this to work more than anything in the world,” I said, feeling my breathing change as my idea solidified in my head. “And I don’t think it can keep doing what I do.”

“You mean crucifying people on the witness stand?” Shep teased, taking a bite of bacon.

“Spouses, more so.” I grinned. “I kind of feel like everything happens for a reason, and I’m just going to see where this next stage takes us.”

Shep smiled. “Did you actually sayus?”

I nodded, feeling dizzy with the excitement of the unknown.

I’d always thought I craved stability, but maybe all of this was for one purpose—to help my best friend, Danni. That part of our lives was finished now. Maybe there was something else out there that would challenge me without feeling like I was losing my soul in the process.

Shep reached over the table and held my hand. “I never knew I could be so happy, and I’m really proud of you for making partner. They should have done it a long time ago.”

I smiled and nodded. “You’re right. They should have.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Partner Up

Shep

Lucy marched out of the office building with nothing more than a box. She had a spring in her step as I rushed over to help.

“How’d it go?”

“Just as expected.” She winked at me.

“They were shocked that I’d leave when I’d just made partner, but they understood that I had an offer I just couldn’t refuse.”

I put the box in my car, not the DeLorean this time.

“Oh, yeah? What was that offer?” I teased.

“Oh, some big-shot CEO offered me an opportunity of a lifetime, and all I have to do is sleep with him.”

My eyes almost fell out of their sockets. “Lucy. There are people around.”

She giggled and shrugged. “Ah, who cares?”

“God, I love you.” I laughed, looping my arms around her and kissing her.

“But remember, there is no work scheduled on the weekends or my team will hate me for bringing you on.”

“Well, we can’t have that.”

Her expression changed, and she nodded. “You know, Shep, I can’t thank you enough for bringing me on.”
