“Do you know what’s crazy?” I asked.

Lucy shook her head and hummed no.

“Even though we were literally just talking about your profession, I wasn’t thinking about you as a divorce attorney. I just see you as Lucy.”

She smirked and glanced at me. “You don’t see a tough-as-nails, blood-dripping invoice waiting to happen?”

I laughed. “Well, when you put it that way... still no.”

“Then what do you see?”

“I see a woman who is kind, family-oriented, smarter than any human I’ve met, compassionate, and beautiful.”

“Humph.” She stretched her legs. “I’ll have to remember that.”

“Please do.”

“Do you want to know what I think about when I look at you?” she asked softly.

“You mean the sexy stranger?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Him.”

“Just let me down easy, okay?”

“I see a grown man who still has boyish good looks and a mischievousness that reminds me how good it is to be alive. I see a guy who is extremely intelligent and loving. And someone who is as broken as me when it comes to love. And you pulling up in a ride like this after the crappy day I had made me happier than you could imagine.”

Hearing her voice describe me in a way very few saw me made my chest tighten. It was almost hard to breathe.

Maybe because I was worried no one but Lucy would see me like that.

I slid my hand over to her knee, and she placed her hand on top of mine.

She giggled and glanced at the ceiling of the car. “And thank you for thinking of picking me up in this beast. It made my day.”

I squeezed her hand and smiled as we continued the drive to my second home.

“Okay. We aren’t headed to any airports, so where are we going?”

I glanced at her as I turned onto the highway, taking us up the mountain to my home.

“You really want to know?”

“Obviously.”

“I have a home up in the mountains.”

She looked shocked. “You do?”

I nodded as I slid my hand off her knee.

“For a guy who proclaims he doesn’t do the relationship thing, you do a really good job at it.”

I shrugged. “Maybe I just never found the right person.”

“That’s smooth, Shep.”

“It’s true.” I let out a deep breath. “In fact, you’re the first woman I’ve ever brought up to my place.”
