I laughed. “Wow. Such faith in your buddy.”

Mike shrugged and took a sip. “Just a hunch. Do you accept the bet?”

I shook my head. “Your hunch is that the most beautiful woman in the bar wants nothing to do with your best friend? Tell me how you really feel.”

Mike smiled.

“Fine. The bet’s on, and I won’t accept a payment plan. I guarantee you that she won’t ignore me.”

There might be a few things she’ll swing in my direction, but pretending not to see me won’t be one of them.

So much for never accepting another dare.

He winked at me. “Not a problem, my friend. You’re not the only one with a few bills in the bank. I’m good for it. Oh, and if you can get her to sleep with you, I’ll pay you double.”

Mike sat back, looking far too sure of himself, while I stood and walked over to the bartender to order a round of drinks for the ladies.

As the bartender followed me over to the table, I spotted Mike continuing with the video, which only made me up my game.

The truth was that I rarely struck out. Had I used my real name at the matchmaking event, maybe life would be different and I would have eloped with Lucy in Vegas.

I walked over to Lucy’s side of the table as the bartender stood with a tray full of drinks. As I was about to kneel down, Lucy shot up from her chair, grabbed her purse, and darted toward the door as Mike stood up and began clapping.

I suppose there was a first for everything, and I couldn’t thank Mike enough for capturing it for all eternity on his phone.

Chapter Four

Oh, Baby

Lucy

“Oh, Lucy. I don’t want you to think like that,” Danni whispered, smiling down at her little bundle of joy named Blair. “If I had never met Bill, I would never have had the best thing in my life happen to me.”

Her words sank deep into my soul as I watched my best friend nuzzling her nose alongside her precious baby’s cheek, and I couldn’t help but smile.

Danni’s eyes connected with mine. “Don’t give up on men. They aren’t all snakes.”

I laughed and nodded, wishing I believed that, but I was a family lawyer specializing in divorce. Boxes of tissue were among my biggest expenses.

Not to mention my one-and-done at a local matchmaking event. Just the thought of that man made my fingers tingle with a desire to get in a boxing ring with him.

Granted, I could have been disbarred if I’d managed to dig my fingers into him liked I’d hoped. So things always work out for the best.

“Okay, but enough of that.” I grinned, running my fingers along Danni’s loose bun.

A person would never know she’d just given birth, but that was how Danni was. She’d always pick herself up and carry on, regardless of the situation.

“My mom should be here any second,” she informed me. “She’s still upset that she missed the birth.”

I chuckled, knowing Danni’s mom was a handful, to say the least. “She’s the one who booked the cruise a week before your due date.”

Danni laughed. “Exactly.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Sore and exhausted but extremely grateful that everything went so smoothly.”

I hid a smile as I thought about her labor that went on all night and into the early morning hours.
