I swatted the air as if a gnat just flew by. “Psh. I’m definitely not falling for a man who told me his name was Perry and crashed a matchmaking event impersonating someone else. I don’t have time for that kind of a jokester.”
“It seems like you’re making time...”
“It may seem like that, but I’m in control here. I’m getting what I need out of him before anything gets messy.”
“Lucy, messy can be okay. Emotions aren’t like hives. They don’t spread to every area of your life. You can be in love and still be a good divorce lawyer.”
I froze.
Was that what I was worried about? That I’d soften too much to be good at destroying the enemy?
I shoved the idea aside.
“I... no. I’m just not exactly surrounded by happy endings.”
“Don’t let my situation tip you over the edge.”
I didn’t have the heart to tell Danni that her ex hadn’t just tipped me over the edge. He shoved me over in a fiery wreck of rage.
But I’d used that to Danni’s advantage, and I knew I was making her ex’s legal team worried over whether we had to go to trial. There was absolutely no way that hooking up with another woman as your wife was giving birth would go over well. The most ideal situation was to scare his entire legal team into convincing him to settle before a date was set.
“I promise you that my heart was solid stone before any of this happened to you and our little Lucy.”
Danni laughed and let out a sigh. “I have a confession.”
“Hit me with it.”
“I’m already dreaming of someone who will treat my daughter and me right, where I don’t have to wonder where he is at night. Where he doesn’t say I look terrible before a shower or that I ruined his career.”
I thought about my best friend’s words. She’d just gotten her heart trampled on, and yet she hadn’t given up on love.
“Wow. You give me hope, Danni.”
She laughed. “What? You think I would have been ruined by love? Absolutely not. I know it’s out there for me.”
“I do too. You deserve the world, Danni.”
“And so do you,” she said quietly, but it was as if the words wouldn’t quite lodge into my heart.
“On that note, Shep is on his way over.”
“Ah, Friday night is date night, huh?”
“He sees me three nights a week for the next few to get me situated with the opposite sex before sending me off.”
“You really confuse the crap out of me, but like you said, you’re my lawyer, not my therapist, and for that, I’m very grateful. Have you read that article about him yet?”
“Nope. I know I should. I just haven’t had the time.”
“I’d seriously make the time.”
I laughed. “Alright, Alright.”
“Have a fun night full of everything but emotions.” Danni scoffed. “Love ya.”
“Love ya too.”
I slid off the phone and collapsed on the couch as I thought about Danni.
