I’d always liked this condo. It was close to my office and restaurants and was much larger than most in the areas. But for the days that I couldn’t handle being in the city, I had a place toward the mountains. I looked at Lucy and realized how little we actually knew about one another. She didn’t even know I had more than one home. But I also kind of liked that. She wasn’t getting to know me for any reason other than me. Not what I could give her.

“I don’t hate the idea of love. I hate what it does to people,” she said flatly before walking into the great room.

I followed, going into the kitchen instead. “Did you want something to drink? Water? Beer? Wine?”

She shook her head and took a seat on the couch while I poured myself some sparkling water.

Lucy sat up straight and bobbed her knee up and down.

“What do you want to get out of this tonight?” I asked, taking a seat next to her. “We already saw that two men wanted to get with you tonight. I don’t know what more you want in terms of a lesson.”

She still sat rigid, but she turned to me and smiled. “What would you normally be doing on a night like tonight?”

The question took me by surprise.

“Probably exactly what I’m doing now. Minus the session on dating.”

She nodded and turned her attention out the window, which overlooked a portion of Lake Union in between office buildings.

Lucy drew a breath and looked back at me. “So, you’d have a lady here, and you’d be making the moves for another successful night.”

I laughed and shook my head. “No. I’d probably be here on the couch by myself, drinking some sparkling water while contemplating what to cook for dinner.”

Lucy smiled. “Without a lady here?”

“It’s not like I’m with a woman every single night of my life.”

She stretched her legs out and finally started to relax. “Maybe just every other night.”

“Not even close.”

Lucy quirked her brows as I took a sip, but I couldn’t take my eyes off her. “I don’t believe it for a second.”

“I’m not pretending to be celibate, but it’s not like I’m on the prowl every single night of my life.”

“Do you ever get lonely?” she asked, leaning back into the cushions. She didn’t look at me as she asked the question.

“I suppose I do. That’s probably why I do spend a fair amount of time with someone.”

“Ah. So, we did get a confession that it’s been upgraded to afairamount of time.” She kicked off her heels and tucked her feet under her. Her tiny toes had pink polish on them, and I bit back a smile.

Why did I even notice the small things about her?

“You really love law, don’t you?” I teased. “I didn’t confess to anything. Just like I didn’t truly agree to help you with your crazy plan at first.”

She laughed and filled my condo with something it had been missing.

Her.

She shook her index finger at me. “Devil is in the details.”

“And an angel can come from chaos,” I added.

“Ooh. That’s a good one.”

“It’s true.”

“Which one of us is that angel?” she joked.
