“We got this, Danni.”

Her eyes met mine, and a smile crept onto her lips. “Yeah? You think so?”

“I know so.” I set my bag down and made my way toward my best friend. “Have you heard from your ex?”

She rubbed her belly and let out a deep sigh. “No. I texted him that I was in labor.”

“Your mom was going to handle that.”

“I know. I guess I just…” her voice trailed off, and my heart ached for my best friend.

I rubbed her back and shook my head. “You just hoped he’d turn into a decent human being again?”

She drew a deep breath and nodded. “Pretty much.”

“Well, I may not have a beard like his, but I’m here now.”

Danni snickered as the nurse stepped in. “Have you looked in the mirror recently, Lucy?”

My hand instinctively went to my chin, and I chuckled.

Danni sucked in a deep breath, and her eyes widened like she’d just seen a unicorn prance by. “It’s coming.”

“It’s not anit, dear,” the nurse hummed as she reached for the oxygen. “It’s a baby.”

Danni and I traded a glance as another unicorn pranced in front of her, and she reached for my hand and let out a scream.

Chapter Three

Disaster Strikes Again

Shep

“There is only one thing in life that I’m sure of, and that, my friend, is that I will never fall in love.” I raised my beer to toast my best friend, Mike, as our bottles clanked amid the bustling sound of the bar.

“Whatever you say, man.” Mike took a swig of his beer and pointed at a group of females huddling near the bartender. “But don’t you think you’re kind of old to be playing the part of the guy who won’t ever be tied down? I mean, you’ve even been put up as the poster boy for Seattle. When’s enough going to be enough? Do you want ten more years of magazine covers declaring your availability to the world?”

I laughed and let out a blissful sigh.

Why blissful?

Because I hadn’t fallen for the trap that Mike fell for.

Just a few months ago, he’d felt like I did. There was too much in the world to do and see without being weighed down by love.

And then something happened to him.

It’s like his wires crossed, and the next thing I knew, I was the best man at his wedding.

I’d gladly stay a best man for eternity. I didn’t want to have to check in with anyone. I wanted to merely exist in my happy place, which at the moment was my favorite bar across the street from my condo.

I’d had a long week already.

And after being mesmerized by a scintillating raven-haired beauty at a dare-turned-dating-disaster several months ago, I solemnly vowed never to get serious. I had my chance that fateful night, and she came after me with claws out.

Lucy.

Ah, Lucy.
