"We wouldn’t want to impose on you for more than a few days."
That was nice. They really were very considerate and– She froze. "What do you mean… impose?"
"You don’t have a lot of space here, and with Drake, it’ll be very tight. You shouldn’t feel like you’re being watched for too long." Her mom laughed lightly.
Oh. My. Goodness."Of course not." She turned to Drake. "Honey, a private word?"
"Sure." Drake grasped her hand "We’ll be right back."
Everyone smiled and waved as he led her to the bedroom. "Take your time,” her father called after them. “We’ll be unloading the air mattresses from the car."
Unloading the air mattresses? She cringed as she closed the door behind them, but did not speak while Drake pulled on a t-shirt. She frowned as it covered his chest. Really, after all the trouble he’d been, the least he could do was provide an interesting view.
He looked up. “Did you say something?
Um, had she said that aloud?“No.”
“Are you certain, because I thought you said something about a view–” He grinned, but his expression soon melted into soberness. “Are you all right?” he asked in a soft voice.
“Of course.” Yet she couldn’t look at him as she strode to the closet and grabbed a rose-colored sundress. “I’m going to change.”
She took a step toward the bathroom, stopped at his words. “Is that really necessary after…”
Her gaze inadvertently drifted to the bed. After what she’d seen – what they’d done – leaving to change was pointless. Still, she averted her eyes as she swiftly slipped off the nightgown and donned the dress. Neither mentioned her flushed skin or his darkening eyes.
When she finished, he was all serious. "Tell me they were speaking figuratively when they said they were staying here. Tell meheremeant the town of Greeniesville."
"That’s Greenfield." She grimaced. "And they meant here, in my house. In my family, one person’s home is everyone's home. Normally, I don’t mind hosting, but just this once, I wish they’d rented a hotel room."
"Can’t you ask them to stay somewhere else?"
She snorted. "Not if I want our ruse to have a chance. They'd know something was off." She sank down on the bed. How had things gotten so complicated? "What are we going to do?"
He sat next to her, placing his hands on her shoulders. "We're going to continue with the plan." With gentle yet firm movements, he massaged her, smoothing sensitive flesh and melting tense muscles. A protest danced on her lips, yet instead she sighed, arching into his administrations. Perhaps they could lock themselves in the room and escape her family altogether.
He leaned closer, casting his woodsy scent over here. "It's all right they're staying here,” he murmured. “Getting closer is part of our deal anyways."
Kaitlyn shivered as her control faltered. "Our relationship will soon be over." Yet the words were light, the tone breathless. They didn’t even convinceher.
Across the room, the knob to the bedroom door turned. Even as she tensed, Drake leaned closer and closer. "Oh no, my little firecracker, it has only just begun."
He matched his lips to hers.
Chapter 9
It was like opening Pandora’s box.
Kaitlyn kissed Drake with unrestrained fervor, pressing into a rock hard chest, filled with power. The kiss was sweet and savory, as Drake captured her once more in his powerful hold, surrounding her with pure muscle-bound strength.Delicious.
In the background, a throat cleared, followed by a soft cough. A thousand consequences loomed, yet still Kaitlyn could not retreat. It finally ended as Drake released her, yet it seemed more a beginning than a conclusion, a promise of more to come. Yet not now, when her family stood at the door with a hundred expressions of surprise, embarrassment anddelight.
Craig finally broke the silence. "I must say, sis, I was skeptical at first, but now…"
A slow blush heated her cheeks, yet it was Drake who responded, "Some things just can't be hidden."
She looked up sharply. Her employee matched her gaze, his eyes dark, mysterious. Was he role-playing or sharing a hidden message only for her? The questions required privacy, a commodity no longer available.
"We didn’t mean to intrude." Her father’s voice held neither approval nor disapproval. "You have a visitor."
