“Or is it weeks? But it doesn’t seem like weeks. My money is on days.”

How was this happening? “Did Dad tell you?”

“Oh no,” Her mother chuckled. “But it wasn’t hard to realize when he figured it out.”

This was not going as she imagined. “What else do you know?”

Her mother tapped her chin. “Well, he obviously isn’t your personal assistant. I figured he was a friend, or an acquaintance, but you didn’t seem to know each other at all. Then I assumed you secured him for the sole purpose of tricking us. Only that still didn’t make sense because we weren’t supposed to come. However, Cynthia was.” She pointed a slender finger. “It seems as if you wanted him there so you could pretend he was your boyfriend and fool Cynthia. Is that about right?”

“Unbelievably so,” Kaitlyn said weakly.

“Yet something unexpected happened.” Her mother smiled softly. “You didn’t intend to fall in love, did you?”

Kaitlyn sighed. “Not even a little.”

“So my question is–” Her mother leaned forward. “Was the wedding real?”

Kaitlyn softened at the hopeful look in her mother’s eyes. “Yes, it was.” Her mother whooped for joy, and she laughed. “It wasn’t supposed to be, but in the end, I simply couldn’t resist. Believe it or not, there’s actually far more to this story.”

“Oh, really?” Her mother teased, but soon her expression turned serious. “You know you can tell me anything, sweetie. I love you, and I am always here for you.”

Yes, she was.She should have been honest with her mother from the beginning. From now on, she would. “I love you, mom.”

Her mother hugged her tightly, like she used to do when she was a little girl. And the world was just a little brighter.

“Do you want to hear the rest?”

“I can’t wait.”

“Would you believe he’s a billionaire lawyer who is also a celebrity?”

Her mother stared for a moment, before her smile widened. “Absolutely.”

Brothers

“I’m goingto teach him a lesson.”

“No.” Kaitlyn grabbed her brother’s arm. “We were both involved in the deception.”

“But he fooled you first, which is unacceptable. No one takes advantage of my little sister.”

“You can’t be serious. What are you going to do? Punch him?”

“Sounds like a plan to me.” Jesse grinned.

“What? No,” Craig denied. “I was going to threaten to sue him.”

She looked upwards. “You don’t want to do that. He runs a multibillion-dollar law firm.”

“I suppose I’ll just have to punch him.”

“Jesse!”

“Just kidding, sis.” Her brothers grinned, boasting twin mischievous gleams. “But is it all right if we make him think we will?”

“No!”

Her gigantic brothers pouted, grumbling about not having any fun. Their expressions sobered a moment later. “Are you certain you’re all right?” Craig asked softly. “He didn’t pressure you into marrying him, did he?”
