Fuck. I pulled my wand out and point it at the danger in front of me.
“Whoa, Samantha.” William had his hands up in surrender. “I just want to talk to you. Please.”
I couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it. I flung a spell his way without really thinking about what I was doing, but, unfortunately, it didn’t hit him. It didn’t hit anyone; it came flying back towards me. I saw it happen, but it was happening too fast for me to react. The spell slammed into me and burning hot pain seared through me as I dropped to the ground.
That’s what happened to my parents,I thought idly to myself as a black started to cloud my vision. The spell backfired. I’m going to die the same way as my parents.
But just before my eyes closed completely, I saw a face looming over me.Hisface. Damn it, he was handsome, so gorgeous, but he was dangerous. He wanted to threaten my freedom and lock me up. After my second misuse of magic, breaking the Code of Magic yet again, he might even want to kill me.
After the day I’d suffered, I guess it made sense for it to end in such a horrific manner. Everything was going black, and I felt extremely helpless…

WILLIAM
“Ah shit!” My arm felt like it’d been hit by lightning as the spell grazed me. Thank God it didn’t hit me the way I was sure Samantha wanted it to. “Fucking hell.”
I grabbed my arm to try to soothe the pain there. I couldn’t see straight because it was so bad. That spell was a really powerful one. This woman was incredible at magic, even better than I first realized.
It was only as my vision started to clear that I recognized something had gone wrong. The spell didn’t justnothit me, it reversed and hit Samantha. She was on the ground and looked like she was in absolute agony. Something I could imagine considering the pain I was currently suffering. God damn it.
I hobbled over to Samantha, trying to find out if she was okay. I asked her a couple of times but couldn’t get any kind of response from her. Her eyes locked with mine for just a second, before unconsciousness claimed her.
I crouched beside her and tried to wake her up, but as I rested my hand on her chest, I noticed that while her heartbeat remained strong, her breathing didn’t seem too good. I didn’twant to take her to the hospital and have to deal with anyone in an official capacity, so I decided to take her to my brother.
Thomas was a great healer, and he would be able to help her. Especially since the color was slipping from her cheeks at an alarming. She didn’t look good at all.
She’d committed a crime, and I scared her by questioning her on it, but I didn’t actually want her to be in trouble. I scooped my hands underneath her and held her to my chest, ready to take her back to my place.
“You need any help?” Oh, for goodness sake. This drunk creep wouldnotleave Samantha alone. It was starting to really grate on me now. “I can take her with me.”
I spun around and growled at him, showing him the true form of my teeth. Thank fuck this seemed to be enough to have him backing away. He might have been pretty wasted, but he could tell he was no match for me.
My protective side came out, and I knew in that moment I would do anything to protect Samantha from anything or anyone. She might have been a stranger who had broken the Code of Magic and made my night very different to what I expected it to be, but that didn’t change how captivated I was by her. Even now.
She’d gotten under my skin in a way I definitely wasn’t expecting, and that intrigue had me picking up the pace. I wanted to get her seen to as quickly as possible.
I really needed Thomas to be home. Otherwise, I wasn’t sure what I would do. I couldn’t imagine anywhere else he would be at the moment, though. It wasn’t like him to be out partying in the city. He had always been the quietest and most reserved Osborne.
Our home was far enough away from the party area of town that we didn’t get disturbed by noise, so it only made sense that Thomas saw patients there. I started running to get inside.Samantha had been warm to the touch when I first picked her up, but she had been growing colder with every second. I didn’t like it at all and was starting to panic.
“Thomas,” I cried out as soon as I opened the door. “Thomas, you here? Henry? Richard? Where the fuck are you all? I need your help.”
I laid Samantha down on the couch carefully before I took a look around to find my brothers. This was the one issue of our oversized home. No one could hear me when I yelled for them in an emergency.
“Thomas, I need you right now! Are you here? Please, Thomas. Where are you?”
It wasn’t Thomas who came to me first, though, it was Richard. He had his sharp detective expression on. His told me he was expecting an explanation.
“I need Thomas. This woman, Samantha,” I pointed at her lifeless body on the couch, “needs help. She performed a spell that backfired and hit her.”
I didn’t feel like talking about the robbery. It was still there, in the back of my mind, but I was more worried about what Samantha had been through. I wanted to help her out of the sticky situation that she found herself in.
“Shit, okay. I’ll go find Thomas.” Thankfully, Richard took off, understanding just how important this was.
I fell to my knees by the couch while I waited for my brothers. Sadness flowed through my veins, I felt sick to my stomach. All I wanted her to do was wake up. If I could just see her eyes and know she was okay, everything would be fine.
“Sorry for making you run,” I muttered to her, hoping that would help. “I didn’t mean to freak you out. I really was just trying to help you, that’s all.”
