Safety protocols were put in place and executed to the best of our abilities.

It was the first major crisis I ever experienced, and I’d been serving my country for years, over a decade at the time.

No dollar bill could fight what was in store for us that day.

Our base was attacked in retaliation, bombed, and blown up from the air until there was nothing left but ashes and rubble. To make sure that there was nothing left living after their attack, they sent ground forces in to finish us off.

Whereas most of my team was able to get out on time, I was left behind.

On purpose?

They shot me ten times that day. The visible scars are fading. Each day that passes heals my body’s physical wounds.

But the consequences of what I allowed to happen will never leave me.

I shouldn’t be alive. I don’t deserve the second chance I’ve received.
