I swallow hard and start to feel uneasy.
“You’re going to do this with her here?” Jamey asks.
“She’s my fated mate,” Alec says. “She’s not going anywhere without me.”
I lift my eyebrows but say nothing.
“I can’t believe you would flaunt her in front of Joelo,” Jamey says.
“First of all, Alec hasn’t flaunted me,” I say, “and second of all…”
“You want me to talk? Fine, I’ll talk,” he says. “We left Grel because of all of the fighting. Joelo’s girl, she was lost. He thought she was dead. We came here, found you all…”
“You purposely looked for us?” Alec cuts in.
Jamey gives me a cruel smile. “Yes. You wanted peace, or so we heard. Coward. Yes, we could’ve stayed and fought, but… That’s when the news came. Despite our leaving Grel, we always had an ear there. Joelo has been obsessed with finding out who it was who killed his girl, and we only just found out…”
I have a very bad feeling about this. Clearly Alec does, too, because he’s looking at me, a slight panicked expression on his face.
“That’s right,” Jamey says. “You did. Joelo’s never going to stop. He’s going to get her back, kill her in front of you, and then he’ll kill you. Eventually. He might make you wait a long while so you can suffer long for his enjoyment. Enjoy what little time you two have together, but it’s not going to last long.”
Jamey starts to cackle, and Alec tosses the knife to the guy who handed it to him, and he accepts a gun and shoots Jamey smack dab in the middle of his forehead.
Alec turns to me. “We have to end this. Now.”
“Just tell me what I have to do.”
“It’s going to be dangerous,” he warns.
“I know that.”
“And you’ll have to listen to me. I can’t bear the thought of losing you.”
“You won’t.”
“You’re not going anywhere, huh?”
“Let’s get this done,” I say. “They hurt Josh.”
“The police officer?”
I nod. “They gassed him.”
“They gassed more than just him. They’re fighting dirty, and we have to be ready for anything and everything. You don’t understand. Joelo is probably insane with rage and jealousy. I… I didn’t realize I killed his fated mate. I hadn’t done so intentionally, but that won’t matter to him. War is war, but now, this is a whole ‘nother war.”
“What is your plan?” I ask.
“The only way to get to Joelo is through you.”
I swallow hard but slowly nod. “You want to use me as bait.”
“I don’t want to, but it might be the only way for us to lure Joelo from his headquarters. We can’t risk going back there. It’ll be a disaster. We need to figure out a place where we can get everything ready.”
“Do you have anything in mind?”
He slowly nods. “Yes, actually. We’re going to need everyone to get armed up, and you’re going to have to have a gun or two. You can’t hesitate. You can’t feel guilty for it. This is war. We need to end this. No matter what.”
“I don’t to have to kill any more of them. Joelo is one thing, but…” I glance over at Jamey’s dead body and then glance away.
