It’s chaos.Sheer chaos. I know precisely what is going on and who is firing at me, and in the twenty seconds it takes for me to grab a gun, Teri’s already gone out the back. I have to fire to give her cover because there are three guys out there and who knows how many out front.
I shoot to wound each of those guys and then rush out of there. If I have to guess, Teri might well call the cops, and even if she hasn’t, one of my neighbors might’ve, and I don’t want to be here when the police arrive.
Even though I don’t have a shirt on or anything on my feet, I keep on running, trying to find Teri. Where had she gone? I can call her, I know, but she might still be on the run, and what if there had been a fourth guy? What if someone is following her? I need to find her and make sure she’s all right.
So instead of calling her, I call up Hal Wilder.
“What’s up, Boss?” he asks.
“I need the home address of Teri Fletcher, the owner of Killer Wheels, and I need it STAT.”
“You got it. I’ll text you with it as soon as I can.”
“Sooner,” I bark.
At the intersection, I pause and try to look around and catch my bearings. The nearest member of Armada to this spot is Elden Gilley, and I start over toward his place when my phone vibrates.
“I just sent you her address, Boss.”
“Thanks, Hal.”
“I heard about the—”
“I’m fine. Maybe send someone to watch over Teri’s house and someone else to watch over Killer Wheels.”
“Right away, Boss.”
I check out the address. Too far away to walk, and would she go home or to work? Maybe to work and then home since her bike is at the garage.
I run the rest of the way to Elden’s house. He comes out as I job up to his front door.
“I need to borrow your bike,” I tell him.
“Of course.”
He gives me the keys, and as quickly as I can, I hop onto his bike and drive over to her place. If she’s not here, I’ll check Killer Wheels. I’m not going to stop until I find her. The cops have to be all over my place by now… if they even bother to check it out. If they don’t… I don’t know how far Joey is going to push things, but this is going too far. Shooting up my place? Seriously? If I couldn’t stand that fucker before, now I hate him all the more.
He ruined my date.
Teri probably wants nothing to do with me.
And I’m done being the nice guy. I’ve been trying to pretend we aren’t at war, but he’s forced my hand now.
I’ll deal with him, but later, after I’m sure she’s all right.
As soon as I reach her place, I’m off the bike like a bat out of hell. I run up to her door. My feet are a little sore from riding without any shoes on, but there are worse things in the world.
I bang on the door, wait a second, and bang on it again.
“Teri?” I call.
Is she home? I place an ear to the door to try to her for any moment inside.
“Teri, I just want to know if you’re all right,” I say loudly.
