“I’m fine.”
“I don’t mean your body. I know that’s fine,” he jokes, but his teal eyes are serious.
Teal eyes.
Fuck. I knew he didn’t look entirely like everyone else form the start, but he’s been staring me in the eye.
With his alien eyes.
“I mean inside,” he says seriously. “You’ve been through so damn much.”
I clear my throat. I have been, yes, but I’ve been through a lot before you, and I’m sure I’ll be through a lot after you—”
“That is not what I want to hear,” he growls.
“I am not yours,” I hiss.
No matter what Joel claims or Alec thinks.
The look Alec is giving me… it’s as possessive as ever. He really does think of me as his.
As his fated mate.
What the hell does that even mean?
No, I don’t even want to know.
I lift my chin. “Once we’re free of them, I want to go to my place.”
“No. We have to leave. We can maybe change our names, definitely skip towns, and—”
“We? No, there is no we,” I hiss. “I’m putting my foot down. No sex is worth my life, and this is my life, my choice.”
“I respect you, I do, but as much as you don’t want to consider this, we need to keep abreast of the facts, and the facts right now suggest that Joey—”
“Joelo,” I snap.
Alec draws back and blinks a few times.
“You want me to consider the facts? How about this?” I hold out my hands. “You’re the one he truly wants, not me. If I were to go with you, that target on my back would remain. We need to go our separate ways.”
“Your house has already been ground zero,” he spits out. “They’ll be there. Hell, they probably are already lying in wait there and at Killer Wheels! If you go to work, you’ll risk endangering your customers. Not only that, he was willing to kill you. He wants to, Teri, and that’s not just because of me. It’s because of you. You killed two of his men, or did you forget that.”
I blow out a breath. He’s right. Damn it.
“You were in such. Tough spot, and you did what you had to do. Don’t you dare regret that,” he says. “You’re so strong, and we can get through this. We will survive. I promise you that.”
I snort. “I don’t think you can promise me much of anything.”
“Then you really don’t know me at all because what I say, what I promise, I deliver.”
I tilt my head to the side and critically appraise him. “Yeah, but the thing is… I’m pretty sure that holds true for Joelo, doesn’t it?”
And just like I thought, Alec has no answer to that.
