“Look at me,” he says, his tone not harsh but forceful.

I take a peek and gasp. Curling around from behind him is a tail.

He nods. “Now do you believe me?”

My mouth opens and shuts, and I honestly don’t know what to think or do or say.

“Now, can we get back to you and Alecor?” he asks.

“Alec…”

“He is not lucky enough to have a tail, if that’s what you’re asking, but he is not the same as Earthling males. He has his own features that all Koxians share, and that includes… Well, we can get into that later. For now, let’s just focus on the two of you.”

“I…”

My head is spinning. He can’t be telling the truth about Alec being this Alecor, this Koxian from Vukox, right? But that tail… Alec looks like an Earthling, though! I’ve seen him naked!

“You don’t want to believe me, and I understand that. I do. It’s a lot to take in, and Alecor didn’t even tell you himself.”

“You didn’t give him a chance to,” I spit out.

Joey snorts and shakes his head. “No. No, no. If he wanted to, he had ample opportunity to, and he frankly should have. I mean, what was he going to do? Woo you, marry you, and still not tell you the truth?”

“I’m sure he would’ve told me if he really is a Koxian,” I say.

“Oh, no, that’s not all of it. That’s not the entire story.” Joey beams at me as if he has the best secret in the world to impart to me.

I swallow hard. “You’re just…”

His tail reaches toward me and touches my arm right on the spot on my wrist where the rope had been. It feels real. It’s not a hand, of course, no fingers, but it feels like an arm.

“How about you let me finish talking?” he asks, sounding more amused than annoyed.

I swallow hard because despite his tone, there’s a glint in his eyes that suggests I’m starting to get onto his bad side.

I bite my tongue and nod for him to go on.

“You are Alecor’s fated mate,” Joey says triumphantly, touching my chin with his hand rather than his tail, “and you are going to be the key to his undoing.”

Alec

It’s dangerous going alone,but I don’t give a flying fuck.

Joey has her.

Joelo.

That fucking Grelite. I’m going to kill him if that’s the last thing I ever do.

And it just might be.

But first, I have to save Teri. She’s innocent in all of this. I never should’ve gone to her shop, never should’ve hired her to paint my bike, never should’ve gone out with her, and I most certainly never should’ve made love to her.

But I did.

Teri doesn’t even know it, that’s the kicker, but the first time I saw her was when I was at one of those general stores that has just about everything. She was trying to find a specific something or other for a bike. I can’t recall what exactly it was, but the worker at the shop was trying to tell her she needed something else. She put her foot down, insisting that she knew what she was talking about, and eventually, the manger was called over. The manager sided with the worker, but Teri just whipped out her phone to prove she was right and they were morons who didn’t believe her just because of her gender.
